What caliber of Savage reloading tool(s) do you have? This is Savage brand, only (no Winchester, Lyman, etc.).
How many of the boxes they were shipped in do you have? (NOTE: This poll box is not current nor working correctly)

Can we talk straight eight presses and shotshell presses? I have two of each (including those I left at the east fest). I also have no Savage reloading dies for my rifle presses.

I have five (Savage model 1904) 303 tools, two 38-55 tools and one 25-35 tool. One 303 set is in the original box with decapper, charge cup and original instructions. Box has end label but top label is gone, interior label on top remains. One of the 303 tools has replacement wood on the handle... probably from an old scythe. 25-35 tool has a slight modification to the die to apparently allow for seating round nose or pointed bullets. I have never seen a 30-30 or 32-40 Savage 1904 tool. BillR Not certain how to enter multiple data into poll!

I entered one 25-35, one 303, one 38-55 and one box. Rick, can you add the other 38-55 and four 303 tools. Poll won't allow me to "vote" more than once. BillR

Thanks for the extras, Bill. I thought there had to be more .303 tools some where.
I heard that the poll would only take one of each, so... if anyone else has tools they could not post please let me know (post or PM) and I will keep tally.
We are at: .303 ... 12 .30-30... 5 .25-35... 4 .32-40... 3 .38-55... 5 box...... 4

1903-1907. After 1907 there was no info listed on reloading of any kind.

I thought the .30-30 was the hard one to find as that is the one that I am missing. But looks like it might be the .32-40 which would be the same as in the rifles.

Take out the boxes and calculate percentage.
303 43.3% 30-30 16.7% 25-35 13.3% 32-40 10.0% 38-55 16.7%
These results are based on only 30 tools. There must be more data available. Does anyone have access to the antique tool collector's sight? (they charge $35/year now) Maybe a survey of their members would generate a larger sample.

All said, the Savage 99 is a genius of a rifle. Although no longer produced, it remains highly revered, as it was the foundation from which Arthur Savage built one of America's great gun companies. >> (Jon Y. Wolfe) <<

I have been told that all reloading tools were not marked. Both of mine in 303 sav have been marked on the handle side of the frame below the hinge point (sav 303) as shown in the photo below. Does anyone know when they stopped marking the calibers on the handles / frames? Will the handle only work for one caliber? Thanks, Blair

The frames of the Win cal tools were not marked w/calibers. Just the dies.

Blair I can not help you with that but there was a reloading tool for sale at James Julia wth what I thought was a VERY high price of something like $1200-1400... I think it was in 25-35... did not see what it actually sold for.
was waiting for the auction to post about it for the count...

The .303's handles were marked while handles of other calibers were not. I have seen no indiction that there were .303's that were not marked. Seperate dies could be purchased so the answer is yes they are interchangable.

I see that in the Canadian version of Savage Arms Company #15 that the tool sets cost $4.00 for the complete tool and extractor. The cost of another die was $2.60 plus 35 cents for the cap extractor. Bullet molds were offered for 25-35 (86 gr), 30-30 (100 gr), 303 (100 gr), 32-40 (98 gr) and 38-55 (155 gr) in regular short range bullets only,no picture of mold is shown. Any idea of year of catalogue #15?? BillR

That catalog lists the 1903 Gallery and speaks of the 1904 World Fair as being in the past. I think the #15 catalog is from 1905, maybe 1906.

Picked up a few more over the past while and a second 30-30 yesterday. So I now have 38-55, 32-40, 303 sav (counted) 2 - 30-30 (one counted one not) and a 303 sav handle (marked sav 303). If anyone is interested in trading a set of 25-35 dies for my extra 30-30 dies let me know, it would be great to have the entire set. Here are the pictures. From left to right in the group picture 38-55, 32-40, 303 sav, 30-30, 30-30, 303 sav handle. 38-55, 32-40 303 sav 30-30 30-30 303 sav handle The tag on the 38-55 handle Blair

jackpollard indicated that: I have five 303 tools, two 38-55 tools and one 25-35 tool. One 303 set is in the original box with decapper, charge cup and original instructions. Box has end label but top label is gone, interior label on top remains.
This is identical to my collection as to number of tools and calibers... including the box set decapper, charge cup, original instructions and condition of the box, mine has end label, no top label but has interior label on top as well.

I think I need someone to sell me a 32-40 tool as soon as possible to end this deadlock. The fact that both our boxes are missing the top label makes me wonder what they looked like and how the label was attached. The relatively low number of 30-30 in 1904 savage tools reflects the same as in 1894 Winchester loading tools. While not rare they are scarce likely due to 30-30 being seen predominantly as a smokeless powder round. BillR

Not a 1904 tool, but an 1895 savage 303 tool made by Ideal. For all of you wondering who the loonie was that bid through the roof on ebay for an Ideal 303 sav tool, you now know who it was Up to the end I was pretty sure I was going to get it for a steal, but unfortunately a couple of other bidders knew what it was, oh well! Leroy Merz has a 303 and a 38-55 tool currently for sale. Records indicate just over 50% are 303 and 32-40 is the scarcest. BillR

Limited audience. Not a lot of takers to your question. I read all comments to this thread so I would not be surprised at ~$1k +/-. As always, rarity and condition apply. .303 appears to be most common. Win. calibers are less common. Partial? complete? Box? condition? If a .300EG is a good start collecting rifles, a .303 is probably a good start with Savage loading tools. Key word "start".

Only comment I would add is that the condition and rarity is way over stated for this particular item. Rare caliber in mint condition will bring 1k plus.

What would a guy have to do to talk you out of the Savage 284 dies?

I have a straight eight press also. Use it for seating bullets and use the RCBS's for the hard stuff. I really like it.
