I shot a rifle over the weekend that came with a Leupold M8 4x. Does each mark really equal 1"? Firstone of these I've played with but it seems to move that way

They are supposed to, but it's rare that they are accurate. Good news is that this scope is tough, I've had several over almost 40 years, have yet to see one that didn't hold zero, let alone fail.
Getting it zeroed is a bit of "shoot and try", but once there I think you'll be happy.

Not exactly what he was lookin for, Yup! What was he looking for? I've only had about 20 of the things....I gave him an honest answer...they have 1" values....if a guy has a problem adjusting them,go past where you want to be and come back....as you get real close to your required zero,make minor adjustments......works every time

I would expect a Leupold to have a better adjustment system than this. I was thinking each mark was a 1/4". Needless to say I had some problems with sighting in.

The key is a solid rest and watch as you move the crosshairs (or better yet someone else moves them).
All you need is one bullet on paper and then adjust the crosshairs to the hole.

blair: They are pretty old and designed for "tough";they held zero through about anything.Like any product out there today newer scopes are somewhat more refined,but I have had the things stay in zero for years,through lots of rounds,many hunts,etc. They are not tough to zero; I did one the other day in 6-7 rounds...you just have to be familiar with their "little ways" What's interesting is that I hear a lot of complaints about Leupold scopes on here;back in the 60's 70's and 80's everyone I knew used M8 Leups of one power or another...you never heard a single scope complaint from anyone...ever.It was just taken for granted that they would "work",and they did!

A little tap can sometimes help things along.

Geez, they aren't clicks but they are infinitely adjustable between the marks.
Most of the M8's I have owned (and maybe all) have NUMBERS on the marks, indicating inches at 100.
In general I have found the friction-adjusted Leupolds pretty reliable to adjust, if you just look at the marks while doing it. In fact the first PH I hunted with in Africa had an M8 4x on his .375 H&H, which has been there for years. He had fuiled little marks on the dials to where it was sighted in for him. When he loaned it to a client it often had to be re-adjusted slightly, but when he put it back to the file marks it alwsys went right back for him.

Blair;
That one is obviously not going to work for ya.
PM me your address and details on the scope, and I'll take it off your hands for you.
