Begin and end with Norma Jean.

I'm going to vote for Anna Nicole Smith, back when she was working here in Houston in the early 90s, before she married a billionaire and blimped up. Sorry no pics but the one I am thinking of is her Guess Jeans ad.....

Of your list, Rita, Greta and Norma would certainly top my list, with Norma actually getting top honors. See some of the pre-Code films she starred in to know why she'd make "sexiest" (vice "most beautiful"). Marilyn Monroe just doesn't cut it for me. I guess I don't find the "I'm dumb, blonde and have big tits" type to be all that sexy. Another actress from that time period that really did seem to be able to exude sexuality, was Barbara Stanwyck: (please forgive the source of that image (berkeleydailyplanet))

As long as we are going back in time;
Can't speak to her sexuality as I never saw her dressed to show herself, but as far as a face thats easy on the eyes, I always thought Donna Reed was a looker.
4 out of 5 Great Lakes prefer Michigan.

I always though that Norma Jeane was phony. Rita Hayworth and Veronica Page have always impressed me as looking just about as sexy as a woman can. Babs Stanwyk was a good actress but she didn't have enough gear on top.

Maureen O'Hara was a beautiful woman all of her life. But when she was young she was absolutely stunning. I remember seeing her as Esmeralda in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Wow, what a beauty she was then.

Really? She has to be 100 I actually looked to see whether or not Maureen had passed. She's still alive and well according to imdb and wikipedia. Otherwise, she and Bacall would be on the list...

I keep an eye out on TMC for those films made pre-1934. Ya know, people actually had sex back then! Judging from the sterile stuff Hollywood turned out in the 40's and 50's, who'da thunk it? Maureen O'Sullivan's costume as Jane in 1934 to 1939. Nice thing about TMC on cable is they keep the nude swimming scene uncut from "Tarzan and His Mate".

Here's another one of Greta Garbo that is supposed to be from the 1920's, although I can't verify that date.

Loretta Young, 1932. The Pacific was cold back then, too.

HTH has Audrey Hepburn not at least been mentioned? (I mean, before now)
