Scopes- my 338/06 had a 1.5-6x36 4200, a 6x42 M8, and a 2.5-8x Leupy at different times. Since the 338 is one that might go after larger game i.e. elk, moose, bear and in timber, a low/mid range variable makes sense. That said, a 4x33 Fx would not disappoint if it mounted up fine on the long action, as would a 6x36, but the 4x would get the nod I believe if it were doing much timber hunting as well as elk. I would not care to use a larger than 2-8 but thats just me. A 1.75-6 'E', might be the ticket for variable lovers

I could see Kimber doing a 338-06 on the new 84L frame... that'd be cool. I'd be owning a third one then. My Rem 700 wear's a 2.5-8 leupold in ultra lows, the other rifle is a Rem 7600 pump with a 4 power German #1 reticle, when it's not sporting the peep sight.

I always wanted to do a 760 with a 19" tube all matte wood and iron in 338/06. Add a fiber optic front and a XS and I'd be golden!

I've had both a 1.75X6 and 2.5X8 (current) on mine. Both are excellent.

Any time. I wonder if Ringworm can help me out on a good buy on a scope?

If I had to pick an "all around rifle" ( heaven forbid!).. the -06 or the 338/06 would definitely fit the bill...

Hey Guys,
...from the prairies to the mountains for deer, sheep, antelope, moose, elk, bears, etc....
Comments? Suggestions? Am I making this too hard on myself? Truly the KISS concept would say 30-06 I'm guessin? For all of the above, I would definitely go with a 300 Winchester Magnum and 24" barrel. You can be hunting deer one day and need to shoot a large elk or moose or Bighorn at 400 yards...or you could be going to B.C. for Grizzly or get drawn for Grizzly in ALberta and end up doing a combo hunt including deer or elk or moose... IMHO, for flexibility, nothing beats a 300 Winchester Magnum with 180 gr TTSX for all-round use.

Agree completely....or a Big 7 shooting 160-175 gr bullets of equally good construction. Both will shoot flatter and there is nothing out there short of Alaskan BB that will not wither from these two......plus ammo is everywhere.
The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.
