I just got two new Remington 700 rifles (a CDL and an XHR) with the new "externally adjustable" triggers. I have adjusted the trigger using the screw per the instructions, and you can adjust the trigger from the factory set 56 ounces, but only to make the trigger have a harder pull. I have turned out the screw as far as I thought I could without having it fall out, but it is still at 56 ounces.

I have adjusted Remington triggers (both old style and the 'newer' old style) and have had good results doing that.

Here's the question, can the externally adjustable trigger be adjusted in much the same manner as the old triggers?

I'm looking to get the trigger set at somewhere between 32 and 40 ounces.

I posted something similiar a few weeks back. You have to get a replacement spring for it. Mine does not go below 3 1/2 pounds but goes up to 6 lbs reliably. It's a nice clean crisp trigger and I'll wait until a replacemnt spring is available.

oldelkhunter, thanks for the reply. I sent a question to Wolff Springs to ask if their Remington spring kit will fit the new X-Mark Pro externally adjustable triggers.

I'll let you know what they say, assuming that they respond.

300MAG, thanks for the reply. I have replaced all of the triggers in the Rugers that I have, as well as on a Remington 788 that I have.

On my Remington 700s, I have always been able to adjust the triggers with good results. Remington triggers are generally smooth and crisp, but maladjusted at the factory. I think that the new X-Mark Pro triggers just need to be adjusted for pull weight. The triggers feel right, just too heavy for my taste.

You might want to try Ernie the gunsmith. He is supposedly coming out with a spring kit for it as well. He has a website.

oldelkhunter, I just adjusted one of my new 700s. It is similar to the older ones. I found a picture of the x-mark (non-externally adjustable) trigger, and the method for adjusting it. http://www.benchrest.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=6024&d=1215829762

What I did was to set the external adjustment so that it was at 3.5 pounds (the factory setting), then adjusted the adjustment screw (the one with the red arrow pointing to it in the picture. leftie loosie, rightie tightie. Mine is now set at a nice reliable 40 oz. pull, with no slam fires. If you adjust yours, make sure it doesn't release when you slam the butt on the floor.

I tore one apart. Had to go to NAPA to get the e-clips, and then torched the goo off the threads, then reassembled and readjusted the sear and overtravel. It's a fine trigger, but yep, the trigger spring needs to be a lower-rate wind. Then it would be an OUTSTANDING trigger.

Weight adjustment screw is on the trigger face. I can turn the screw all the way out counterclockwise until it falls out and it is 3 1/2lbs. I had no problem adjusting the regular x-mark pro trigger just like any other 700 trigger. I think some people are confusing the new trigger that came out in 2009 with the 2007 x-mark pro trigger

I'm not up on tyhe latest Remington triggers. Am I to understand that they have changed the X-Mark Pro already?
I do have a rifle with one but have not messed with it.

Yep in 2009. It is a very very crisp trigger but the pull weight can not be lowered below 3.5 lbs it is known as the x-mark pro adjustable trigger

FVA, the new trigger came out this year. There was an X-Mark that came out in 2007 and ran throught 2008 but it was not "externally" adjustable. You can adjust the new (2009) X-Mark pro just like you would adjust the 2007-2008 version. Here's what I did;

I found a picture of the x-mark (non-externally adjustable) trigger, and the method for adjusting it. http://www.benchrest.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=6024&d=1215829762

If there is a 1/16" allen screw that extends down inside the trigger guard on the trigger, then it is the 2009 trigger. If there isn't a screw there, then it is an X-Mark pro. Either way, you can adjust them according to my earlier post.

If there is an allen screw on the face of the trigger you have the new one. if it is gunsmith adjustable you have the old one

No you cannot. I can unsrew the weight adjustment screw counterclockwise until the screw falls out and it still pulls 3 1/2 lbs.

Oldelkhunter, I'm not talking about the external adjustment screw. You are right, that screw won't adjust to less than 3.5 lbs.

The screw that I am talking about is the one pointed to by the red arrow in the picture that I provided the link to. The picture is of the 2007-2008 trigger, but the adjustment works for all of the X-Mark pro triggers.
