could smeone help me compare. im not very up to date on optics

Which one have you already decided to buy?

It'll help with your ensuing justifications to those that don't agree.

i bought a prostaff but the man at the counter said that they are pretty equal. im just wondering what other people think about the two. im a leupold guy but i didnt have the money for the scope.

No comparison. Not even in the same price range. If your considering a Nikon prostaff than I'd go with a Weaver. The Weaver in a 4x or 6x is a better scope than the Prostaff. A 3x9x38 Weaver is also in my eyes better than the Prostaff.

I've even comparied the 4X and 6X Weaver to the Nikon Buckmasters 3x9x40. The fixed weavers out shine the Buckmaster at dawn and dusk..

I own both, have two of the Leupolds and one of the ProStaff's (all three are 3-9x40 size scopes). The ProStaff is not in the same class as the VX-II, being more equal to a Leupold Rifleman or maybe a VX-I. The ProStaff is a good scope; it costs half the price of the VX-II so you save some money, but it is just not in the same class. They both do great on my rifles most of the day, however you can tell the difference during the critical light periods of the day (very early and very late).

He's full of schit, and you're deluding yourself, but there's no way you'll consider any advice that you're wrong. Track records are a PITA.

Nikon claims that the ProStaff has the same lense coatings as the Leupold VX2, but to my right eye the VX2 is a brighter scope. I have several Nikon ProStaff 2-7x32s and 3-9x40s that I like, but my 1st tier (serious) rifles all have Leupolds.

The ProStaff's lower grade lense coats are pretty obvious during low light, first/last light, because they don't allow as much light through to your eye and if you are trying to look close to a rising/setting sun you're likely to see flare around the edges. So from 1/2 hour after sun rise to 1/2 hour before sun set they're pretty equal to the fully coated VX2 lenses, but during that low light critical hour, they just aren't as good.

That said, lots of folks have killed lots of critters over a long period of time with scopes that are inferior, optically, to the ProStaff series.

They are ok for what they cost. I use one a muzzle loader and they are much better than blister pack scopes. They are not a VXII.

Never claimed you'd lie; just that'd you'd find a way to try to convince yourself that the Prostaff (decent scope) is as good as the VX-II (better scope).

Your track record makes a lot of suppositions a given.

VXII over Prostaff all day long. Weaver over Prostaff all day long.......

If you own the VX II already - how is it you can't compare them? If you bought the ProStaff - put it next to the VXII and compare. I mean - you already own it right?

The sun rises and sets everyday. Compare them in low light.

Do your parents not own a front or back door that is in working order? Has the sun somehow stopped working, depriving Coon Rapids MN of sun sets and sun rises? More than likely a scope that performs better at dusk than another - is gonna perform better during rain and snow and stuff...

Spend a little (about $20.00 more) extra money and buy the Burris 3-9x40 with the ballistic plex reticle and you will be happy with it. They are better than a leupold in low light conditions and they have a lifetime warranty.
