I read many good reports on their accuracy so bought some for all three of our rigs(2-1187 12ga, and 1 1187 20ga).

In one 12ga with the factory FR CL bbl they shot fairly descent groups, plenty good enough to place a kill shot on one.

In the 20 with factory FR CL bbl they shot good and at 1900fps, they should perform quite well.

Then, we get to my rig with the 24" Hastings FR CL bbl and all things went to crap. 1st bout 4" low, 2nd bout 10" high, 3rd 6" high, 4th completely over a 30" target!, 5th 5" low, 6th and 7th couple inches apart 4" high and 3" right. I'm thinking the new 3200 2-7x32 is toast, but had to run a few of the old faithful Win part golds to be sure. 1st top left of the bull(little piece of elect tape), 2nd top center of the bull, 3rd high flyer, 4th cut the bottom edge of the tape. With 3 touching the tape and one alittle high I think the scope is ruled out and I know what I'll be hunting with smile

I now have 5 boxes of Rem ATs to stack beside the 4 boxes of Hdy SSTs that shot like crap as well smile

With 4 boxes of the Wins, I think I'll be set to go for a while.

Any of you tried the new ATs?

You have a fickle slug barrel. I have a Hastings rifled barrel also. I spent a lot of money shoting different brands of slugs. The best one for me is the Federal Premium with the 1 oz Barnes Expander. I can shoot 2" groups at 100 yards with them. Most of the other slugs have similar results to yours with Accutips including Win Gold Partitions.

There is nothing more finicky than a rifled slug barrel. Someone should hold a yearly swap meet where we can get together and trade what didn't work for us for what did with someone else whose experience was exactly the opposite of ours. Best advice is that once you find something that shoots for you quit paying attention to any and all advertising for a different brand. Once again, I'll suggest that anyone starting out give the Federal/Barnes a first look. Not guaranteeing it will work for everyone, but it's a good place to start. Best to all, John

My 1187 cantilever barrel would put 3 shots darn near touching with the 2 3/4" Federal tipped barnes, but wouldn't shoot the Win partitions or the SST's worth a darn. Go figure...

Yep, I suppose most of these slug rigs are finicky.

Marty, all of our 1187s will not shoot the SSTs worth a hoot as well. A few months back there was a guy at the range with a cheapo Moss 500 that would stack them at 100.

For kicks a few years back I loaded some cast 525grn Lyman slugs(look like giant air rifle pellets) in AA 2-3/4" hulls with AA12R wads for sabots and a stout dose of Blue Dot. Crimped in my MEC they looked like a trap load, but trust me, they didn't recoil like them smile Those loads shot around 3-4" at 100 and nearly 1600fps in the Hastings bbl. Probably should have loaded a bunch of them and used them for hunting, but never did. They would probably put a deer down in short order for sure and definitely easy on the pocket book.

Winchester BRIs fly like a dream out of my Hastings. I tried the SST and Fed Barnes with no luck.

Reloader7RM,
I have a guy that runs a gun shop here in town... he does some custom reloading. He started loading that exact same homemade slug combination your talking about. I bought a box and I was getting shots at 75 yards into in 2-3" circle w/ Benelli SBE and Shaw barrel(admit not as good as the Federal / Barnes expanders, but 1/4 of the cost!) He sells them for $14 for a box of 20. I have probably 20 boxes bought... my boys and I will shoot these until there gone... probably year 2030!!! A great combinatoin for little money.

This is my 3 shot group at 100 yards with the Remington Accutip 3" 20 gauge. Shot through a Savage.
