I like Hawk's answer....the 7 Mag solution grin

But the truth is a guy who can shoot will do fine with any of them....and a guy who can't shoot is not gonna be happy with any of them either.....

The 280 Remington is overbore.

The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

best post in this thread....I agree with both points.....a .284" 160 at 3000 covers a lot of bases.....

Both are great rounds & it really boils down to personal preference for the round or preference for a particular rifle.

I've killed elk & moose both with the 270 & it ain't even a marginal caliber for either, IMO.

I don't like a heavy rifle when not really needed for a heavy caliber, so w/o a doubt, I'd take the 270.

Out to 500 yards, the trajectory of the 2 rounds is close enough to say no real difference, tho the energy edge certainly goes to the 300, but I know the 270 will cleanly kill elk at that range, as I've done it.

As the range passes 500 yards, the 300 becomes more attractive, it you can/plan to shoot at those ranges.

The package that the 270 generally comes in is way more attractive to me from a weight & carrying standpoint than any extra punch the 300 gives for the animals to be hunted.

brooksrange, both are good choices with bullets listed, I'd probably lean a little more toward the .300 WM. memtb

Best to use your 270 Winchester.

I have a done the same combo hunt for deer, lope, and elk with a 300 WBY shooting 180 NABs at 3180 fps and loved it. A bit much for lope but ended up shooting mine at 400+ yards with a strong wind so my choice was not terrible. Worked great on the deer and elk too.
