I like the Springfield XD, but my 45 XD doesn't like to feed right with all ammo after I put more than 9 rounds in it.

What 40 cal. pistol (aside from a Glock) should I be checking out?

SIG P226, XD, the new pistol from FN, S&W MP 40
Those would be my short list for the .40S&W, in descending order

Why no Glocks? Does the boring monotony of a bang every time you squeeze the trigger just leave you cold?

Before I leave the house every day there is a Glock .40, 9mm or 10mm and spare BBs on my side.

SIG 229s are also quite dependable and accurate though they need more maintenance and must be kept very wet to run well.

Hear M&Ps are running well, but no personal experience.

Of the modern type, I think the all around best is the Smith & Wesson M&P series. If you want the best all around, you need to look at an older design, i.e., the Browning High Power. That was designed in the days before lawyers were part of the design teams behind handgun development.

Sig, Sig, or Sig.........take your pick. Try a P220 and you might not even think about a .40 S&W....

I only have a lowly Sigma 40VE-but it is my favorite .40 s&w.
Serves it's purpose well.

I am leaning toward the Beretta PX4 Storm. Had an XD-40 and sold it -- liked it a lot. Had a Browning Hi-Power in 40 and did not care for it -- sold it too. Might consider the FNP-40 if I do not get the Beretta. Had a Sig 2022 in 357 Sig, liked it but too much muzzle flip. Don't care for a buddy's Sig P229 in 40. Handguns are very personal things. About the only handgun I am truly satisfied with is a Colt Peacemaker or a Colt 1911. I am willing to give the PX4 Storm a try. Best advice I can give you is get what you like, and don't worry about what everyone else likes. Handgun has to work for you.

I have all of these, and my order of preference is
S&W M&P
XD-M
XD
Sig 229 (probably #1 if I wasn't left handed)
H&K P2000
Sig 2022

Again, just my preferences, I really think you need to go handle all of them, and maybe shoot them to make your own opinion.

If you want to conceal it, look at the Kahr MK40. I have one and it is tiny but heavy enough to shoot well -accurate for category - dependable and built like a tank. Smooth trigger. I love mine.

Wow! How did I forget about the Kahr. I have the P-9, and I'm sure the P-40 would be a dandy too.

My XD works fine in 45acp and it would probably be my choice in a 40.

A couple quick comments about the tiny Kahr guns. Most of the complaints I have seen have to do with the polymer models. I would want to shoot the polymer model S&W .40 (PM40) to see if the recoil is tolerable as it is quite a bit lighter. The steel gun (MK40) is very tolerable to shoot, IMO.

What are the major difference between the Sigma and the M&P?

The M&P is an updated sigma. but the changes are many, different frame, with removable/changeable backstraps, a mag release that lets you change from left to right hand, stainless steel slide with black melonite coating, rail for mounting lights or lazers. You can get it in more calibers, and even with or without manual thumb safety, magazine disconnect, night sights, full size or compact.

The sigma comes in 9 or 40cal, a couple of different color frames, blued or stainless slide and that's about it. Feels very cheap in my hand.
