Thanks for the suggestions. I did try to source some Dyna Bore Coat locally, but couldn't find anyone who sold it. Tried Sinclair International but they can't send it through the post. Anyway, I just got back from a session at the range, and after a thorough clean with solvent then a good polish with JB paste
(again!), I shot a couple of reasonably respectable- 1 1/4"- groups of 200g Woodleighs over 44g of Benchmark 2 sparked by Rem 9 1/2 primers in Fed cases. I then switched to the same load with Federal 210M primers and the groups shrunk by half!! Beautiful cloverleaf 3/4" @ 100 meters. Perfect shooting conditions for a change - 20 C and no wind. Might take this load hunting in the near future!
Cheers,
John

Anybody working with Hornady LeverEvolution and 200gr or 225gr Accubonds? Have a bunch of the preceding on hand but haven't started loading anything yet.

I have only used LVR with the 210 Partition. Worked fine. Right around 2600 with 49 grains. Basically the same as 2000MR. JB recently published an article where he used LVR with the 210 TTSX. His velocities were less than what I've seen with the same grains and the 210 Partition. The 225 AB is really long and will take up a lot of powder space. The 200 AB really interests me right now. I have a lot of 210 Partitions and should use those next fall, but I want to try the 200 AB too. Something about a 200gn bullet that just seems right in the 338 Fed.

Edit: BruinPoint, I'd be very interested in hearing how LVR works with the 200gn bullet. The load data has 49gn for a 210 Scirocco II and 52gn with a 215 gameking. Ought to be able to get 52-53 for a 200gn and potentially some good numbers.

That's the thought that led me here - should get some good numbers with the 200's. Haven't made it a priority to work on but I'll report back when I do.

So I got out and tested a few loads with the Barnes 160gr TTSX and Benchmark. Loaded up shot 3ea of 48gr, 48.5gr and 49gr. The first load, 48gr, printed a nice little 9/16" group @ 100yds. 48.5 went 1-1/4" and 49 went just over 2". No high pressure signs yet and book max is 49.5 but I don't think 1/2gr will allow me to hit the next accuracy node so I may just stick with the 48gr and run it over the chrono and see what happens.

I'll be interested to hear what that load is running after you chrono it.

Me too. I,m tipping only about 2820~ 2830 f/s.
I got to try my 200 gr Woodleigh load on 'flesh & blood' this morning. A big fat fallow deer spike. One shot at about 120~to 150 yards ( not ranged ), left side through heart and smashed right shoulder at the elbow. Golfball sized exit. Sorry, no recovered bullet pics! I'm very happy with that performance, and it should be great on bigger game like Sambar or Elk. It's a great little round!

Ok, so I ran that load across the chronograph. The load is 338 Fed head stamped brass, BR2 primers and 48gr Benchmark under a 160 gr TTSX COAL 2.82" average 2825 fps.
I also worked up a handful of loads with TAC. I worked up to 50.5 gr and got 2855fps and no pressure signs. Going to load up to 51gr and see if they shoot as good as the 48gr of Benchmark.

TAC looks very promising with the 160 TTSX as far as speed goes. From my chrono tests, it gains about 60fps for every 1/2gr increase in powder. At least from 48 to 50.5 gr. Now the question is, how well will it shoot? I hope to find out next weekend. It has to shoot inside of 1" for me to change from 48gr Benchmark @2825fps which shoots inside 3/4" pretty consistently.

That's good to know, I had not tried TAC with the 160. 8208 was just over 2900 FPS. Given the unavailability of AA2230/X-Terminator at the moment it's good to have suitable options.

My new Magnetospeed chrono arrived today so I had to go check it out. It's worth noting that the chamber was quite toasty for much of this so any rounds sitting in it any length were very hot. Very handy chrono for shooting at an indoor range. Based on the tests done by Brian Litz, it is as accurate as they come.

200 Accubonds
47 TAC: 2623, 2656, 2647
47.5 TAC: 2659, 2675, 2667
48 TAC: 2684, 2686, 2670

45.5 8208: 2620, 2627, 2614
46 8208: 2634, 2646, 2634
46.5 8208: 2650, 2658, 2667
47 8208 (Lapua Brass): 2644, 2641, 2645

I think the AB has potential. One primer in each looked kind of flat. Not sure what happened. The chamber was hot, and I did sit there for a bit fiddling with the sight picture on a few shots, so those would have been quite hot. But a solid 2650 with a 200 AB, with a very temperature resistant powder, is something to like. Also one of the 47gn TAC primers was rather flat. Odd.

Also did these:
200 Trophy Bonded Tip (Factory): 2645, 2640
200 Trophy Copper (Factory): 2556, 2547
210 Partition (50 LVR, BR2): 2567, 2571
200 Hot Cor (52 2000MR, BR2): 2573
200 SST (52 2000MR, BR2): 2642
185 TTSX (48.5 TAC, BR2): 2748, 2738
185 TTSX (48 8208, BR2): 2742
160 TTSX (52 AA2230, BR2): 3071, 3063, 3056, 3075 (there are no visible signs of pressure at all)
180 BT (48.5 TAC, BR2): 2781, 2790
200 Hot Cor (52 LVR, BR2): 2662, 2698, 2666 (middle one sat in a rather hot chamber for a bit)

prm,
You've done quite a bit of testing of various components with the 338 Fed now, so you must have formed some useful conclusions by now, as have I. Unfortunately, local availability of components often clouds the water! My favoured load lately arrived at is a 200g Woodleigh with 44 g Benchrest 2 and Fed 210m primers in Fed 338 Fed cases. The virtue of this load is that the powder just nicely fills the case up to mid-shoulder making seating the flat-base bullet a soda . . only slightly compressed. It produces 2690 f/s in my 22" barrel and the bullet opens-up reliably but also retains weight and penetrates well enough. However, I am almost out of Benchmark 2 and have been unable to get more at the LGS and have been told that it ( and a couple of other ADI powders ) is being replaced by Benchmark 8208 XBR which would seem to have some desirable characteristics . I have bought a kilo and have loaded-up some test rounds, but haven't had a chance to get to the range yet. It would seem that it fills the case a tad more than the BM2 and is thus, more compressed ( something you must find with the longer 200g AB?). It is interesting that your top loads in the Lapua cases produced slightly less velocity despite .5 grain more powder! Do they have greater volume?
How did you find potential for accuracy with the 8208 compared to some of the other powders you have tried, given that velocities produced seem pretty close?
I found the 200 NAB shot well and worked predictably well on game, but have swapped over to the Woodleigh due to supply issues and cost ($28.00 a box more here!)
Looking forward to further progress reports, and will post my findings in the near future.
Cheers, John

The Lapua brass does have more volume. Between the TAC and 8208 with the Accubond, I found 8208 seemed more accurate. I am going to play with 46-46.5 and see what I can do.

These were all fired through a 22" barrel

Interesting, thanks for sharing. I bought one abut 5 weeks ago and I've been using it for load development for an Axis hunt with 257R, 7mm-08 & 6.5x55. I can't decide what to bring, the hunt is in June. I just pulled out my 338 Federal and loaded some 180 NBTs over 48.5 of TAC to try out. The Magneto speed is so much easier to set up at the range. I really like mine as well.

Edit to above post: realized I loaded them differently than what my notes originally stated. Just need to add .5gn to the 8208 loads. Writing the actual charge on the brass with a sharpie proved a good thing yet again.

46 8208: 2620, 2627, 2614
46.5 8208: 2634, 2646, 2634
47 8208 (Fed Brass): 2650, 2658, 2667
47 8208 (Lapua Brass): 2644, 2641, 2645

Scott,
You could just flip a coin . . they are all good choices for Chital with a good bullet. The Fed with 180 NAB would certainly be a top choice, in my humble opinion!
prm,
I'm really impressed with the low ES of those loads. I've loaded similar test strings for accuracy and hope to get to the range to try them tomorrow, but it's pissing rain here at the moment, and there's a bit of wind forecast for tomorrow. May go anyway.

I have loaded 6 160gr TTSX with 51gr of the AA2230 and will get to the range soon to see how they perform from the 18" barrel.
