I have a Ruger M77 with tang safety. The original trigger has a pull that is too heavy. I wish to replace or modify the trigger. Here is what I think my options are:

1. Modify the original trigger for a lighter pull.
2. Reinstall a Canjar trigger. Ive already had this trigger installed twice and removed twice because it kept misfiring when used as a hair trigger.
3. Install the Rifle Basix Sear (http://www.riflebasix.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=204). My understanding is that the original trigger is used with a new sear.
4. Install a Timney trigger (http://www.timneytriggers.com/sunshop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=23). I am wary of this trigger because I am told that it makes the tang safety switch very mushy.

Please let me know if there are other trigger options available and give me your recommendations.

the trigger on the tang safety rugers is adjustable. I have timneys in my rugers, the safety is not mushy at all in fact it is a bit stiffer to set.

I used the Rifle Basix sear on my 77. It's easy and you get a good pull. What weight pull are you trying to get?

I think Dayton Traister makes a trigger for the old M77, check their website.

I have a Ruger 77 Mark 2 in 243 and I did a trigger job on it. If you polish the bolt sear and the top of the trigger where it meets the sear you can drop the trigger pull dramiticily. I think my trigger pull is somewhere in the area of 1 lb if that. Some don't like it that light but it made my groups shrink. It did not affect the safety at all and I swear by it, I dropped my gun out of the deer stand a couple of years ago and the gun did not go off, I think I was in a 16 foot ladder stand. Start with 400 grit emory cloth and work your way up to 800 grit and pick up a 6 pack of your favorite beer, and make a night of it. It will take a little while, but it's a lot cheaper then buying a $100 plus trigger.

A word of caution!

I know that the Timney trigger is wider, so that if you select it, you will need to mill a larger slot in the trigger guard. This would not be a problem if the trigger guard was steel, but the tang safety Ruger 77 uses an alloy trigger guard that cracks very easily. I know this because it happened to me when upgrading the triggers on a couple of tang safety 77 RSIs.

I found out also that Ruger has an overtravel adjustment screw retrofit for the tang safety rifles. Ruger sends them for free. mtmuley

a flat mill file and needle files work just fine for opening the slot in the trigger guard. You can even wrap the file in medium emery paper.
