I just started reloading for 270 again and really liked the tread on 130 grain bullets. So just looking for ideas on the heavier bullets.

Darryl, my best load so far using the 140 grain Hornady Interlock Boat-tail is:
57.0 grains H4831SC
WIN WLR primer
W-W case
From a 22" Ruger M77 at 10ft. the load clocks 2810 fps measuring with a Beta Master Chrony. Groups average 7/8" @ 100 yards in the Ruger. Velocity was clocked at 75F.

My 22" ADL shoots very well with 59 grains of H4831sc and a 140 Accubond. This is a fairly stout load so be sure to work up.
Velocity is right around 2950fps.

53.4 grains of RL17 and 140 grain Hornady Interlock with Winchester LRP.

For my Pre-64 .270, it's 57 gr. of Rldr-22 and a 150 Gr. Partition. Lottsa groups under an inch. This load is giving me 2930 fps and is 1 gr. under max. in the book. Perfect for sheep & caribou.

Anyone use H4831sc with 150 grain partitions? My 270 is pre-64 model 70 that I bought from Handwerk here on the fire.....I love it! He is great guy and not really sure why he helped me find the rifle that I had been dreaming of for alongtime. I am going to save this info thanks guys.

That is a nice rifle!I DO shoot 150 Partitions[as well as 150 TSXs and Hornady 150s] all with 57.0 H-4831sc, win cases and Fed 210 primers out of my Sako Finnbear, and they all shoot verrry good! So, go ahead and use said powder. I'm thinking you will be good to go. Let us know how it turns out. Tom

58grs H4831 over a 150gr Speer Grand Slam in a 22" bbl tang safety M77 chrony's right at 2875 fps and shoots groups better than 130 grain bullets and for that matter...better than some varmint cartridges I have owned. There were days at the range if I was doing my part it would group at 5/8".

Darryl, I forgot this: Sako has 24" barrel, and FPS avg is 2900.

I have H4831sc, RL19, IMR4831 so I am glad to hear you guys are having good luck with them.

150 grainers are my first chioce for the 270, may as well take advantage of the higher Sd and BC, it shoots just as flat, and the wind doesn't push the 150 around as much.

Have been running 58-59 grains of H4831 with 150's in my 270's for decades. Liked RL22, but that load lost a fair amount of velocity and ES opened way up in frigid weather when I chrono'd them in warm weather vs cold weather.

Most 270's with 22 inch bbls will see 2875-2900 shooting 150's.

I have had good success with 57gr. of H4831SC and the 150gr. Partition. My chrony shows 2850fps, the targets are very nice and I have used quite a bit of freezer paper as a result!
Keep it simple and good luck.

58-58.5 gr of RL22 or Norma MRP with 150 for 2950-2975.

Another grain to a grain & a half for the 140's to get to around 3025.

Pretty stiff loads so start 2-3 grains less & work up.

Can you use H4831 and H4831sc loads in place of the other?

Yes you can; same powder, same loads, different granule length, direct substitution. Lot to lot variance is your only issue, so the standard warning applies; drop back a couple of grains and work back up when switching.

140 grain Partition, 57 grains of IMR 7828ssc and Win Mag primer, close to max load, very accurate.

In my 270 loads, H4831SC seemed to be a tad faster--Ten shot strings consistently averaged 25-30fps faster--and I have chrono'd those rifles a LOT with H4831.

Maybe I'm being anal-careful, but I would also recommend dropping back a couple grains when switching to the SC powders.

56 grains of RL-22 gave very good accuracy in my .270 with 150-grain partitions but I never chronographed the load. That same powder charge with 160 grain partitions also gave very good accuracy and chronographed just over 2,700 fps. Many guys don't like the .270 160-grain partition because it's "only" a semi-spitzer but it actually has a better ballistic coefficient (.434) than the 130-grain partition (.416) and the 140-grain partition (.432). It also has a great sectional density of .298 and has been very accurate in every .270 rifle in which I've tried it.
