The weight is about perfect IMO. Originally the barrel wasn't fluted, but I had it done to get the weight down. I really like this rifle, as it feels like an extension of me when hunting. Fit is perfect and points very naturally.

Bottom one is a Rem 7600. I replaced the factory Monte carlo synthetic stock with a B&C stock. The factory stock just didn't fit me, and was tough to use with the open sights. Weight is 8# even as it sits in pic. Topped with a Leupy M8 4x with a German #1 reticle. I replaced the front sight with a fiber optic. In the past I have removed the scope and rear sight and used a williams peep sight to play around with at the range.

Both shoot to the same POI with Hornady 200gr SP and Nosler 210gr Partitions. But my favorite load for the 700 is a 210gr Barnes TSX @ 2800+ fps.

I have G33/40 action in my safe and am thinking about building a nice wood/blue 338-06. I would try to get the exact same weight as the 700 or slightly lighter. But I don't know If I could hit the mark with a classic wood/blue build. Of course it would get topped with a Leupy 2.5-8. Then I would have a trifecta of 338-06's.

Nice rigs CRS! Did you rebore your 7600 or rebarrel it? They both have hunt written all over them.

Dober,

I had it rebored. Yeah, they are both made for hunting. The pump was built for my Dad to elk hunt with. He shoots left handed and has used a 760 Gamemaster in 270 Win for going on 40 years now. But I have had a lot of fun with it too.

I also agree with the marketing issue, Remington should have come out with the 338-06 instead of the Whelen IMO. They would have had the best of both worlds. The wonderful performance of the 338 cal and some competition to the 338 WM. It truly is a blue collar working man's type rifle.

A-Sqare and Weatherby just don't go with a 338-06. Those names make me think of big $$$, elitist, high society type hunting.

I have a couple 9.3's also, but they are 9.3x64 Brenneke's. Though the pair is not completed yet. Maybe 2010?

The 338-06's also pair up nicely with my stable of 270's.

Dober,
Yes, it's a 338-06. It will get your attention, but recoil isn't as bad as one might think. The barrel is a TC Custom Shop heavy contour. The grip is a Pachmayr Decelerator. I do wear good shooting gloves (full finger) as it will beat you up after awhile. Matter of fact, a friends wife shot it with no problems and she'd never shot anything larger than a .45ACP before this.

Come spring I'm gonna get some loads finalized using 200gr Accubonds, 210gr Scirocco IIs, and 225gr Hornady Interlocks.

I've got a .358 Win in Encore Pistol barrel. Mine is an MGM barrel at 14" with a brake. It will get your attention from the bench. I would think that your would be worse than that witout a brake! Wow, nice looking rig though.

Great pics guys !!

Mine was built in fall of 2008. It is a Sako m75 Greywolf 338-06 Ackley Improved that was a new 25-06. Removed the barrel and had my gunsmith build the caliber on a new PacNor supermatch grade stainless #5 barrel. Fluted, powdercoated gunmetal grey to match the Leupold VX3 scope. Powdercoated new style Sako Optilock Ringmounts, receiver, bolt handle and face plate of clip.

Shoots 225gr Accubonds and TTSX's groups of about 0.5" right now. Pic of ammo was with new Norma 338-06 brass with rounds to form-form brass to the Ackley. Overall weight is 9.62 lbs.Almost identical to what a factory Sako m75 Greywolf 7mmRM, 300WM or 338WM wolf weigh in with scope and rings.

Love the caliber. Now I just need to get my bull moose draw or find a nice 6x6+ bull elk to break it in on!!!

Thanks for the complement. It weighs 9.62 lbs with scope as mentioned..forgot to say its a 24" barrel. Almost same weight with scope with factory Sako m75 Greywolf in a "V" action (7mmRM/300WM/338WM)

The blank barrel was a new PacNor supermatch grade stainless #5 barrel bored, fluted and cut to 24" by my gunsmith. 1-10" twist rate-sporter contour. With the flutes, brings the weight down almost to a #4. Weighs almost the same a factory Sako m75 Greywolf "V" action rifle. Shoots like a dream.

Still have the new factory 25-06 barrel that the rifle was originally-may keep it now for a rifle for one of my son's when they get older.

Took me just over 2 years to find the Sako m75 Greywolf rifle to make it work - "IV" action). I originally found a mint 30-06 but the retailer wanted too much for it. Tried several offers. Finally found another retailer with a new one...got it for less than the used one!!

Thinking of doing another Sako m75 Greywolf - 330 Dakota - just to be different.
Wouldnt mind finding a 270WSM m75 Greywolf also or a SS one and put a Macmillan stock on it I have picked out.

There is a few I have read on other forums, but none where I live that I know of. Alot of guys in B.C. for sure love the caliber for elk, moose and bears. I just did it for something different as the caliber interested me and I wanted to do a wildcat based on a Sako m75 Greywolf. My reloading buddy wants to do one also, I just built mine first. He is going to build his on a model 70 Winchetser.

Very mild recoil. My Tikka T3 LS 270WSM has more felt recoil with 140gr Accubonds than the 338-06AI with 225gr Accubonds.

Mainly used my Sako m75ss 300WM with 180gr Accubonds but the 270WSM has really impressed me. Mostly did the 338-06 to shoot 225gr bullets.

JS,
Lee, Hornady, RCBS and Redding sell dies for the 338/06. They can be found on Midway USA and I'm sure other places.

Mine is a Weatherby but I'm no elitist, just an average guy who found a great deal on the rifle and very happy I did. I would have thought that when Weatherby went factory on it, one of the big 3 would have followed suit. I thought at the time 7-8 yrs ago Remington actually announced a 700 that was to be chambered in 338-06 but never was produced. The market is not huge but I believe there is enough interest to sell some guns. The only one I know of now is the Cooper at $1800+.

I bought originally to be different knowing it would be a handload only option. The RCBS dies and 30-06 cases work very well.

ChipM,

If I had not already built my 338-06's before the Weatherby came out, that is what I would own.

My whole life, I have always associated Weatherby with the higher social status and A-square for the guys that can afford to go to Africa. I don't know if the Art Alphin name helped much either.

It is not meant to be derogatory in any way, just my perception and the marketing that has occurred. This is coming from a rural modest upbringing.

I think had one of the big three brought it out, the 338-06 would be enjoying more success.

CRS,

I understand and none taken. I also agree and fortunate I own 3 Weatherbys now that I did not pay retail for, just an avg guy who got lucky and shops for good deals. If one of the big 3 released it, I would have probably owned on produced by them. I also agree that I believe the 338-06 would have been more successful.
