I've been contemplating putting a 260 AI barrel on a M70 Ultimate Shadow 7/08. Will I have feeding problems with the controlled feed and the steep shoulder angle?

I had a M70 Classic in 6mm AI and it had no problems. Feeding wasn't quite as slick with the formed cases as it was with the fireforming loads, but it was plenty good enough. Just my 2 cents...

@ Spaff-
Slightly off subject, but what barrel length are you planning on using? (again, has zilch to do with feeding but I was curious about the other)

I'm inclined to go 22".

I am considering short action rounds but want a 20 or 22 inch barreled gun, just can't see that I'll gain much from a AI if I don't go a full 24" though. Was sorta wondering if you thought the same...

If it was me---- I would look to go 6.5x57AI that is if I wanted to increase velocity. I would need to check to see if the 57 case will function in the short model 70. And I would go 24". That is what I would look at. But the 260 case will not be useless by any stretch of the imagination.

Bullets ---95 gr. Vmax for all things varmint and any of the 120 gr. to the 130 gr. hunting bullets for all things eatable. It should do everything my 6.5-06 does out of a short action. You might need a larger freezer.

While I've never done it, I can't imagine you having any issues with it.

I search this sight and others and this fella says you need a long barrel and another says you don't lose only a few fps per inch . . . what's a fella to do? The rifle has a 22" barrel on it now and I'm comfortable with that length so I figure that's where I'll go. That said I'm not committed to anything but my wife so shorter or longer is possible.

Tis my opinion that you'll still see the normal AI gains, it'll just be realative to where you started out with a 22" tube.

Point being, if you would normally gain 100 fps with a 24" tube then you'll gain the same with a 22" tube.

I can address several of the points here, as I have built them.

My favorite cartridge is the 6.5 x 57. Unless you are using the lighter bullets, you are better off going with a long action. Sort of the same reason, a 6mm Rem is a total different animal in a long action vs short action. Seating the bullet further out increases velocity potential substantially.

The 260 or AI version will feed just fine thru a Short action Model 70. Am in the process of doing two of those now. a heavy magnum contoured barrel in 26 inch and a varmint contour also in 26 inch.

If the 260AI follows in the footsteps of the 243AI, you should get about a 1% increase in case capacity, about 5 grains, which would equate to about a 0.25% increase in velocity potential. The biggest advantage to going "AI" would be that the sharper shoulder will almost certainly reduce case stretching and increase useful case life. However, this is a "cost/benefit" balancing act. IOW, what will be the cost of X stretched cases to reach the cost of buying/renting a 260AI reamer and buying 260AI dies?

I think that the Remington 700 LSS MR format is about as close to the perfect vehicle for a 260 as can be found in a production rifle. Not too short, but not too long. Maybe a little heavy, but nothing that can't be easily fix with an application of McM Mountain Rifle stock in standard or Edge format. You can't go too far wrong with your 260 build in a Winchester 70 if you build it to mimic a Remington 700 LSS MR.

I have a variety of rifles chambered in 260 with barrels as short as 18.5", a Ruger 77 RSI and a Remington 7, to as long as 26", a Savage 11 with a Shilen heavy barrel. The 22" Remington Ti/MR contour balances nicely in the short 600/660, 7, and 700 Remington actions and will likely do so in your SA Winchester 70 action.

Did you mean a 10% increase in capacity, thus a 2.5% increase in velocity?

I would think 5 grains would be about 10% of 50 grains or so.

You're right! It looks as though I need more fingers!
