so i have heard that savage has a new barrel nut on thier rifles. but i cant seem to find a picture of it anywhere. anyone have any pics? or a link?

the barrel nut has been one thing that always keeps me from buying a savage rifle. its just plain ugly to me.

It may be ugly, but it sure makes life nice for the 'do-it yourself' type.

Ditto. I bought one with the smooth nut. It is an American Classic. See pics below. Some light dust show up as specs under the glare of the flash. In addition to smoothing the barrel nut, Savage also changed the bolt release mechanism, which is the lever on the flat or slabbed side of their original action. Now, the receiver is rounded, and the bolt release button is located in the front of the trigger guard instead. The overall looks are much improved in my opinion. I still think the accutrigger is ugly.

Funny thing though, I don't see many stores carrying the new styled rifles, and would think Savage would be pushing them more.

I need to find out what kind of wrench is available to remove the new nut. Obviously the one I have won't work.

I suspect it would be some kind of spanner wrench with a pin for the hole in the nut. A call to Savage would clear it up I'm sure. I've considered getting a .358 Win barrel for mine.

Someone here will wonder if the "reinforced" nut will give it strength...

The barrel nut is what makes them accurate..........

I recently changed & set up a new Savage 110 FP in 25-06 for a buddy...you need a new style nut wrench fromm SSS in Ohio for $50...or simply use a pipe wrench and destroy the smooth nut..then replace it with the old style nut....we had a 6.5x284 Pac Nor built for the 110 action...the hex head bolt that holds the bolt together is also gone....you can't replace the recoil lug with a fat machined lug...the skinny factory lug fits in a slot w/set screw from what I rememmber...I much prefer the old style Savage with the ugly nut....easy to disassemble bolt to change bolt faces...next project is a large shank no taper heavy 6XC P-N varmint/target rig for another guy...about three more week wait..I have a safe full of old Savage rifles all with P-N tubes on 'em...no new ones in my future.....sorry Ron..... here's my 20 Practical..

They haven't stopped making the old style have they? As far as I know, they are producing both old and new barrel nut and action types. Correct me if I'm wrong.

From what I understand the recoil lugs on the Accustock are different. Since they are held solid in the stock by screw/wedge piece I don't think the machined recoil lugs would be of any benefit. Should still be able to work on them like before, just need the new wrench.

I built up an old 112 in .22-250 with a Douglas XX airgauge, trued the action and kept the old trigger, just spent some time tuning it.


I have hurt some feeling with that rifle, and a couple of groundhogs at 400+ yards.

It would look at home with tomato vines on it, though.
