Yep, it's not what's on the outside but what's on the inside that counts.
It might not be sexy, but with the better powders today, and carry over ft-lbs, and the newer bullets you've got more versitility today in the 30-06 than any other round.
Not to mention it'll kill and elk easy... yet doesn't kick too hard for deer.
Can't find an old timer who doesn't have one, or know what they're worth.

I've got a 270 - probably gonna turn it into something more useful like a 25-06.
Lots and lots of posts on teh quarter bore lately.
Used to have a 25-06, but I've got a 243 today, so I'm thinking to take both the 243 & 270 in and get a 25-06 again.

That's a good idea. The 25-06 is a very useful tool.

I added a new 30-06 to my collection yesterday! Seems weird with all the calibers out there that the 30-06 just seems to get everything done without worry.

Spot Apparently, you like going backwards....you're reading too much. The 30/06 is a great cartridge....you got that one right.

The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

The 30-06 is the "Crescent wrench" of cartridges. There is always something that will fit a specific situation better, but the 30-06 fits so many. Bruce

Never thought the 30/06 was the perfect round...
but it is awfully good round.
and no true american rifleman and hunter can really be one, unless he owns a Model 70 in 30/06 with a Leupold 3 x 9 on top..
same with owning a 30/30 also..
just the way I see it..

Perfect? No. Utilitarian, yes. Saying the ought-six is perfect, especially when compared to numerous other "sexier" cartridges, is like choosing Hillary Clinton over Fridge Girl. Hillary is certainly capable of killing -- probably with a mere glance -- but I'd classify Fridge Girl as far more dangerous.

I don't know if it is, or ever was "perfect", but it has darn sure withstood the test of time. You could sure make a good case for it being the best "all around" cartridge. A lot of cartridges have come and gone but the 30-06 is still very strong. Pretty much anything short of one of the great bears with an attitude the 30-06 is a solid choice. Name the quarry, select the right bullet weight and type......go hunting. With ammo costs so high, the 30-06 makes more sense than ever. There are also a lot of quality used 30-06's out there as many guys are going to more glamorous chamberings. Price, availability, and performance makes for a good strong case for the "old" 30-06.

People alot smarter than me developed the 35 Whelen and the 260 Remington. It's my "duty" to buy them.
I saw a movie where only the military and the police had guns. It was called Schindler's List.

I think the 30-06 does enough things well enough that its an easy choice for the average hunter. It shoots flat enough for the average hunter. It hits plenty hard enough for the average hunter.
I'd put the 270, 280, 7mm Rem Mag and 300 Win Mag in that same catagory. Some shot a bit flatter, some hit a bit harder, but in the end, their effect on game won't be too different. Plus, ammo is easy to find.

The 06 may not be perfect, but it's still the cartridge by which all others are judged.

Can't see how anyone's improved upon the 30-06 and gotten better performance and versitility out of the result. IF you define perfect by not being able to make it better the old 06 has got it.
Considering my hunting situations, shot angles, ... vary significantly that versitility comes in awfully handy.

.270 is better. Flame suit on! you must not deer hunt. you should know that if you take it up your gonna need a 338 mag, minimum for TX deer. the 270 doesnt have nearly enough energy to knock them out from under the feeder or blow the ear tag off.
