Could one elaborate a bit, and save me some surfing?. I'm not much for memorizing catalog numbers, and I just ordered a Brooks mould. I know my order was a 545 grain Creedmore, but don't recall the number.

Ranch 13--I never found it to be as accurate as the 457193, either in my 1-20 or my 1-18 twist 45-70 or 45-90. YMMV.

Well guess we'll have to see what can be done with the thing. Santy Clause done had one drop shipped in here. Hoping to make it an off hand bullet?

Well, it does seem to recoil less than the 457193, but who can tell. It has deeper grooves and carries more grease than the 457193, and the driving bands are not as wide and flat on top as the ones on the 457193. Maybe the 457124 does not seal as well and develop as much pressure as the 457193, hence gives less recoil? I'm both guessing and speculating about the bore sealing issue or lack of it. Who really knows for sure?
It's heavy enough to be an elk bullet, though.

Don, I've used that bullet for many years. It's the bullet for carbine trapdoors. Also a very good hunting bullet when cast 30:1 or softer. For deer and similar critters it is an excellent bullet.......softer recoil than the 125 Lyman. 55 to 60 grns of Goex 2f should be about right.
Merry Christmas to you an Carol!

George,Bill, thanks for the input. I'm hoping to be able to get this thing to shoot well enough for the offhand targets at the Q, Alliance, Ekalaka etc. Thinking the lighter bullet and quicker speed to the target may help the off hand scores a bit?? Been shooting that "350" flat nose they had the special run on for the 4575 , but it drops at .457 and 340 cast from 20-1. Shoots ok but leaves a trace of lead and I don't know if it'll go to the 350 yd Q without doing some didoes along the way. Merry Christmas fellers, looking forward to the priviledge of shooting with you again in the coming year.

Got some cast up, and loaded on top of some 5744. (to cold and miserable to mess with cleaning bp at the moment) Anyways nothing real scientific but shooting off the rest at the 270 yd gong, kept it ringing with no problem.

Anybody use this lyman bullet? Any quirks or helpful hints? A friend had several that simply would not shoot 15-20 years ago. I had one I had bought about 1972 he borrowed it and it shot good for him so he then traded me out of it, basically he would not give it up. Its really only useful of trying to duplicate the old military carbine load. The 124 is a copy of the 405 gr gov't bullet or very close and will weigh about that weight if cast soft. 457193 is the best commercially available mid-weight bullet. It's Lyman's copy of the old Marlin 45-70-420 bullet and will weigh about 420 if cast soft. If you need a bullet around 400 grains that is problem free this is it. Dan

Well I've been relatively happy with this bullet. So far the accuracy I'm getting from it is more than enough for what I wanted it for. The basic premise of this bullet was for an offhand load with enough speed and lower recoil to make staying on the various offhand gong targets a simpler proposition. To date it will keep my 270 yd gong swinging as long as I break the trigger with the sights where they need to be, and bench tested shows groups running at about 2.5 -4 moa at the 300 yd line. Cast out of about a 16-1 alloy and weighing 387 grs sorted +-1
