Hi Guys:

First let's do the short version, and then the long version.

The short version is that I will be setting the Private Messages quota limit at 75. That means you will be able to store up to 75 PMs either in your sent or received boxes (75 each).

The long story:

I had upward of 3400 Private Messages in my Inbox and about that many in my Sent Box. Every time I opened Private Messages, it took forever and really put a load on the server. Those quick exchanges of short PMs back and forth caused a lot of server load, because the server has to generate the new page every time with thousands of entries. And I really didn't need to work those messages every time ... they basically just needed to be archived and accessed very infrequently.

But I couldn't delete my PMs because I need a whole lot of them as reference for business, etc., and I was pretty sure that lots of other folks wanted to save theirs too,

Soooooo...

I found a software hack that allows you to email PMs you want to save to yourself. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> Now, if you look at the bottom of your inboxes, you'll find red button that says "Email PM." What this allows you to do is select PMs, either all (Use the "Check All" button"), or a group of individually selected ones (keep track with a screen shot) and email them to yourself. I created a Folder in my Outlook called "Campfire PMs" and I simply moved all my PMs into Outlook (they are now individual emails). Now, I can search them (can't search PMs), preview them, etc., much more easily.

Once I emailed them to myself and checked that they were safely stored in Outlook, I went back to my Received PMs and Sent PMs boxes and deleted all but the last month's. Guess what, it's real zippy again. Much easier to use.

So in the next few days, I will impose that PM limit globally so we can really cut down on server load. If you send someone a PM after that and you get a message that says "So and so's Inbox is full," we can refer them to the link for this thread (it will be a sticky thread), and they can clean out their PMs without losing any at all. The idea is that from now on, when you hit your limit, you can simply hit the Check All box, then the EMail PM box, move everything into your Outlook, and clean out your boxes without losing one message, all in about 10 seconds! No muss, no fuss.

Please post any questions on this thread. This will really cut down server load.

Rick

BTW, does anyone have more PMs in their box than me. I hope I have the record!

I cannot get it to send my PM's to any of my Email addresses... O.K. either of them, work or home. I would like to make it work as much for you as me.

Yo Rick...Why can I not PM anybody?
I can't even PM you!

I keep trying to PM other members, but keep getting that "Private topics are disabled for my level", or something like that.

I'm a nubie and really enjoy your site...but I am unable to navigate it and communicate with other members....please help!

Thanks,
Charles
