I recently found a Savage Model 4S bolt .22 at a local gunshop for a decent price (rare in CA!) and bought it. It came with a clip that looks just like a Savage 23A clip, but works OK (a little stiff). I believe this rifle was made in the late 1930s; it has the manual cocking piece that also functions as a safety, and a very nice checkered pistol grip (but no checkering on the forend) stock. I wanted a spare clip for it.

Also found at an importer a near-new Savage 4M Deluxe .22WRM, a gun I've wanted since they first advertised them in 1960 (?). Also at a very decent price, because it had no clip, and "You can't find clips for these anywhere!"

I looked at Gunpartscorp.com and they had a clip that was advertised for the Model 4 .22 LR. Got one; not even close. Probably for a later Model 4 than mine. Sent it back.

MidwayUSA listed clips for both these guns and I got them and both work great! The .22 LR one is their part #75424 made by John Masen, Inc. (you can also get these direct from the mfr.). Works better than the clip that came with the gun.

The 4M clip they list is their part #832734. It worked perfectly with no tweaking. Oddly it is listed not just for the Savage 4M and 34M and 65M, but also for the 982MDL (Marlin???) and Mossberg 640 "Chuckster"! If this is all true, Savage and the others must have sourced clips from the same mfr. and copied each others' designs!

Anyway, don't necessarily pass on a decent Savage bolt .22 just because "you can't buy clips for it". You probably can.

Thanks Mike, that's good to know. Now if someone would make some 1903 clips to look original.....
