Hello, I need a bit of advise & info please. As I am looking at purchasing one of the Savage models mentioned above. My questions are:

* Are these NEW series of Savage HMR rimfires a quality built(any plastic bits or malfunction/warranty issues) accurate rifle.
* Are the weights stated on their website true & correct.
* Would you buy another given the choice, or another brand like: Marlin, Stevens or CZ???

This rifle would mainly be a 'walk around' stick. And at this stage I'm not interested in the heavy bull-barrels, but I do like the look of the BVSS(laminated) , which seems to be in-between in #.

Thanks in advance grin

PS- Is the Stevens 310 worth a look?

Please feel free to list any other 17HMR brands you recommend. Thanks again.

I have the Savage stainless heavy barrel .17hmr with a riflebasix trigger and nikon scope. Easily shoots one ragged hole at 100y. Has a plain plastic stock. No issues, purchased when they first were available.

Only issue Ive seen or heard so far with the Savage is the magazines..apparently under heavy use they will discombobulate...just what Ive heard...Accuracy is superb...
My personal fave is the heavy Ruger 77/17 VBBZ...I can vouch for the durability of that one personally...Mine has well over 10K rounds down the tube, with nary a bobble...
Gonna get about another 1K in the next couple days I hope... grin

Savage code conversion table:

B = laminated stock
F = synthetic stock
NS = no sights
SS = stainless steel
T = Thumbhole laminated stock
V = varmint contour barrel

I have 2 Savage 93R17s in the BVSS format that I like a lot. I had a 93R17FNS, but found it to be too light, so I rebarreled it with a reworked Green Mountain 77/17 barrel.

In general, I like both the heavy and light barrel Marlin rimfire bolt action rifles, but only the heavy barrel Savage bolt action rimfire rifles. If you're looking for a light barrel walking varmint rifle, my recommendation would be the Marlin 917S. There isn't any recoil, so eye relief on the scope isn't critical. I have a couple of the $75 Pentex Gameseeker 4-12x40 on 17 HM2, 17 HMR, and 22 MRF rifles and find them to be a good choice for thsoe applications.

In general, I have found that, like many rimfire rifles, those chambered in 17 HMR can be very brand specific when it comes to ammo. Some will shoot CCI better than Hornady, while others will only shoot Remington, but not Winchester. You'll just have to buy a variety and see which brand(s) works best in you particular rifle.
