anyone have any pics?

my mom has a nice remington 722 in 257bob. the stock is worn out and the barrel is missing 90% of the blueing. she cant really get around enough to hunt anymore with really bad knees. so she told me she would trade me for my 30-06.

i was thinking about getting a new barrel and stock for it. i can get a "ti" style stock with mountain contour barrel channel, and a 24" mountain contour barrel from a buddie for really cheap both off of a remington 700. but he is out of state and doesnt know if they will work on the model 722 action. the stock itself is for a short action

will it work?

thanks.

A 700 stock may be easily fitted to a 722, just make sure both are SAs. I would not change the barrel until you give it a good cleaning and try it out. 722s are noted for accuracy, almost always superior to current Remington barrels.

If it is original (even if worn exterior) a 257 722 is a valuable rifle and will bring $500 or more if unbutchered.

Suggest you post some pictures here.

The 700 SA is the direct replacement for the 722, just as the 700 LA is the direct replacement for the 721. With only a couple of small difference that require hand fitting.

The barrel shank specs are the same, so a Remington 700 barrel will screw into a 722 action with minimal machine work to set the headspace and get the roll-stamps lined up correctly.

Back in the 1980s, used 722s in 222, 257 Roberts, and 300 Savage were as common as dirt and could be bought all day, every day, for under $200. I bought them by the dozen for the actions and just threw/gave away the stocks, barrels, and bottom metal.

FWIW, I thought that the 700 Mountain Rifle contour barrels were all 22". All of the 24" Remington 700 factory specs barrels that I have seem to be more of a magnum contour then a MR contour.

Before making the decision to chuck the barrel for a new one, shoot the 257 barrels on the action now. I would doubt that the barrel has enough rounds thru it to hurt accuracy, even though the bluing is worn off. Rebluing is cheaper than a nw barrel. Scub the barrel good before shooting it, to get any copper fouling out.
I have a 722 in 257 Roberts and it will, with several different loadings, drop 3 shots into a 1/2" group at 100 yards.

Please do NOT take that barrel off unless you are absolutely sure it is trash. That is just too darn nice a setup in a classic rifle to change.....IMHO

the rifle shoots lights out now. 1" or less with the 4x scope...

but i hate open sights, with a passion.

the rifle itself is in good hunting condition. blueing is crap, stock is decent. but the metal finish is still very nice, no rust or pitting at all.

it is just in need of a face lift basically.

I think the open sights on 721's and 722's make them an interesting collector's item. I have seven 722's, and really enjoy the open sights they have. Many of the ones I bought had the rear sight removed for scope mounting. That I don't like. But, I found that Brownell's had repacement rear sights so I bought the replacements. Unfortunately, they are a different design from the originals.

Why don't you sell it to me rather than messing up a classic?
I'll pay you $400 for it and you can go find a 700 donor action
on which to build your dream rifle.

In fact you could but a whole Marlin XS, that with a little tuning will shoot bug holes!

I have a customized 721 with a stepped barrel -- looks original to me. Nothing like a 700, of which I have LA amd SA.

Just curious about the 721 request.

I have two 721's, One has been re-barreled with a Heart stainless 280 Remington barrel and I did have a Remington 700 BDL stock on it, I'm replacing that with a synthetic. The other 721 was in 270 Win and has been re-chambered too 270 Gibbs and has a beautiful maple stock on it. I bought the 280 from a friend and picked the Gibbs up at a estate sale.

i would never sell the rifle. thanks for that offer though.

this action is about the smoothest factory action i have ever felt. blueing is perfect aswell.
i just wish i could say the same for the barrel. but the rifling is perfect.

though the pawn shop up the road has a 721 in 30-06 with a leupold scope for $350...i guess i can just go buy that one and rebarrel it to 257...i know the 257 works on a long action aswell. and i have a model 700 long action stock sitting on the closet.

i think i may have to thank you guys for talking me out of ruining this rifle.

thats why i post these questions to give me a little more time to think things over.

thanks

If you are going to rebarrel the long action (721), make it a 25-06 as you can always load it down to 257 levels but still have the extra oomph if you need it. Be sure you get 1 in 10 twist.
