I have a 1935 300 Savage EG my Grandpa gave me. Serial #350XXX. It's missing the rear sight. Everything that I have researched tells me it should be an elevator sight and not a Tang Sight. It does have an empty dove tail slot on the barrel. I am trying to find an original sight to put on. Can anyone here tell me what kind of sight it is.(Manufacture, Number, ect..) and where I might be able to pick one up. Thanks in advance for everyones help.
Lightfoot, thanks for the quick reply. Would this be an original period sight (1935) for my gun? Does it say Savage or anything else on it? Is it adjustable for Windage and Elevation? How much are you asking?
Anybody know what sight might have been used in 1935 and how different it would be from the semi buckhorn? The only one I can think of is the flat top sporter.
Elevation is adjusted with the elevator. It is not windage adjustable except for use of a brass punch.
I think its likely the semi-buckhorn... Murray list the semi-buckhorn for several other models prior to 1936 and we all know Murray's book isn't perfect. There is really no way to know FOR SURE... either the flat top or the semi buckhorn would seem appropriate and thats about the best you are going to get.
Picture attached of the common EG sight. Although, the 1935 might have been different. According to Murray, the semi buckhorn started in 1936.
I have 1 (and only 1) left for sale.
The sight you attached a picture of is the No 21 and is all that is listed in catalogs for the 99's without tang sights in the mid 30's - yours doesn't have the sliding fine adjustment feature for the notch - that is no longer shown starting in 1937.
Here are scans from 1936 & 1937, I have never seen a No.21 with the fine adjustment so I do not know if they had the patent stamped on them. Also I think we all know that catalog information may not be totally accurate. I also included a picture of a couple sights that I think are No. 21's but are slightly different.
