I have been thinking about the different safety systems getting around these days(old & new), & thought it would be good for a thread.

Please correct me if I am wrong as it's been a while since I have owned some of these rifles. So I am just going off memory wink

Remington 700 & 7600: Blocks trigger.
Sako L579, 75 & 85: Blocks firing pin.
Tikka T3: Blocks firing pin.
Sauer 202: Blocks sear & trigger.
CZ 550: Blocks firing pin.
CZ527: Blocks firing pin.
Model 70 Pre-64 & Classic: Blocks firing pin(full & mid position).
Mark V: Blocks striker & sear.
Kimber 84M & 8400: Blocks firing pin(full & mid position).
Browning A-Bolt: Blocks sear & firing pin.
Ruger Hawkeye: Blocks firing pin.
Blaser R93: Thumb slide cock/decocking system.

Nosler 48 'Custom Sporter' with 3 position Timney?
NULA with Timney?
Browning X-Bolt?
Howa 1500?
Weatherby Vanguard?

Please add, fill in the ???, & correct if needed grin

Ruger MKII and Hawkeye safety blocks the trigger. It doesn't touch the firing pin unless the trigger block fails. Then the safety catches the firing pin, if the safety is in the full rear position

Ruger tang safety blocks the trigger.

Mauser, Springfield, and M1917 Enfield, block the firing pin (when unmodified)

According to Stuart Otteson's book "The Bolt Action"

Remington 700: blocks the sear and raises it off the trigger

Sako L461, L579: blocks the trigger and sear

Ruger M77 Mk I (tang safety): blocks the trigger

According to Frank de Haas "Bolt Action Rifles"

Browning BBR and A-Bolt: blocks the trigger

Brno ZKK600 series: blocks the sear

Ruger M77 Mk II: blocks the trigger

Other rifles that have the safety on the bolt shroud:

Sako L46 and L57: blocks the firing pin

Brno 21H: blocks the firing pin (actually probably the cocking piece)

Brno ZG-47: blocks the firing pin

If you want to be REALLY nitpicky, most of the bolt actions that have the safety on the bolt shroud (e.g. Mauser, Springfield, Weatherby Mk V, Winchester 70) actually block the cocking piece rather than the firing pin, as does the Enfield 1917, but since it is unheard of for a cocking piece to break off from the firing pin it amounts to the same thing practically speaking. I believe the Brno ZG-47 safety directly blocks the firing pin and not the cocking piece.

Thanks for clarifying the exact terms associated men.

Please keep it coming, as I'm sure there are many here interested & keen to learn as I am, what certain rifles mechanics are.

PS-It seems the Browning X-Bolt "blocks the firing pin & trigger sear, which therefore locks the trigger".

Doesn't the Ruger MII safety actually latch into the firing pin when fully "On"? Seems like it actually locks the pin, if I remember both 77/22s correctly...........

Yes, in the middle position it is blocking the trigger only, in the full third position it blocks both the trigger AND the Striker from moving forward.

The true firing pin safeties pull back the firing pin a bit so the cocking piece is no longer resting on the sear. The trigger can be pulled through the full range of motion with the safety on.

The Ruger doesn't do that. On the 77 MKII's I've had, the safety moves into a notch on the firing pin, but does not touch or move it. It has no contact with the firing pin unless the trigger block fails. I think of it more as a firing pin interceptor than a true firing pin safety. The Ruger trigger is blocked in both "safe" positions. The MKII safety works nothing like the M70 safety.
