I have thought about getting one of Bansners High Tech Specialties 20oz. lightweight stocks for a Model 7. Any opinions on the quality of these stocks?

Are there any other high-quality very lightweight stocks for the Model 7 that you would recommend?

Excellent! Until McMillan came out with their lightweight stock, the Basner was arguably the best lightweight out there. It may still be.

I ahve both a Lone Wolf and the Basnser, and the Basnser is stiffer in the fore end and seems sturdier overall. The both finish at about the same weight. My Basner is on a #4 barreled 338 Win, and the rifle weighs in at just under 7lbs naked. With the mounted scope it is under 8 lbs. That is light for a 338 Win. I have had this rifle elk hunting twicw now and have beat the snot out of it. The stock is holding up very well.

I broke my Banser at the wrist in a fall and after three messages left with a receptionist about help I never got a call back. I then went with a Wildcart Composite and am extremely pleased. Its a couple ounces lighter, stiffer in the forend, less expensive, finished out better with no pin holes and Stuart is a nice guy to deal with. He will talk your ear off and demand to know how your project turns out. Each stock is made when you order it so he will customize at little or no extra charge.

Can you give us an idea how stiff the foreend is? Can you pull the foreend into the barrel? How big is the gap between barrel and forarm? How difficult is this to do? What kind of pad will Stuart install?

I googled as much as I knew how, but can't find a website or even anywhere to buy a Wildcat Composite. But it seems that they do exist out of Edmonton, Alberta.

Anybody have more info?

Sorry if I teased everyone here is the info

Wildcat Composites 9804-51 Avenue
Edmonton, Alberta
Canada T6e-0A6
(780)434-6137
(780)440-2771 fax

He still does not have a website but Rocky Mountain Gunworks in British Columbia uses a lot of his stocks for sheep rifles.

As I said before each one is made to order so if you want a specific contour cut in the forend Stuart can take care of that. As far as fitting recoil pads I dont think that is offered. He strickly makes the stock as a blank and does not offer any bedding or finish work on the stocks.

Regarding forend stiffness it was stiffer than the Banser compared side to side. I generally run plenty of clearance, about an 1/8"+ and can run as tight a sling as I can and will not flex to hit the barrel. Another nice thing is the stock has "solid composite pillars under the action". This seems to eliminate the need to use conventional pillar bedding. I skim bedded my .308 and .35 Whelen and get consistent sub moa performance out of light weight rifles. One other difference between the WC and Banser is the WC is slimmer through the wrist and buttstock. The butt is about 1/4" narrower and could translate to less comfort shooting but that has not been an issue for me.

If anyone needs more info I can fax the sketches and installation sheet. (sorry my scanner is not cooperating).

On arrival it was 17.9 oz, 18.7 after bedding with JB weld ( I hogged out quite a bit from the forearm to get a lot of free float), 19.4 after paint and some grit on the forend, and finished at 24.2 after putting a 1" kickeeze pad on (I know its only a .308 and all you need is a piece of foam from a sandal but I like it <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />). Finished weight is 6lb 8oz with a #2 Pacnor, Burris fullfield II and talley rings.

Stuart said that stocks will be +-1oz due to humidity changes during manufacture.

It's nice to hear there are some options as to where to get lightweight stocks built. What does Wildcat charge since you say they are less?

I presently have 2 Bansners and have had others. They have composite pillars integral with the stock, and require no pillar bedding.I have great luck with them and consider them very good. But I have Brown and McMillan as well and think highly of them also.

I have my share of Bansner's. I like them a lot but I too like the Brown and McMillan. Of the three brands, I've noticed that felt recoil is less with the Bansner stocks than the same BA in a McMillan. I attribute that to having a little more flex than the Brown and McMillan.

If you're looking for a lightweight drop-in stock from the manufacturer, the McMillan Edge is your huckleberry. Bansner won't supply you a finished stock with paint etc. unless you want to send Mark your barreled action and have his team do it - that comes at a cost. If you're handy (unlike me grin)and don't mind doing the work yourself, the Bansner is a nice option.

They sound nice! Seems like all these stocks come in about the same weight after bedding ,paint and pad.

Do they make a stock for the Ruger Hawkeye? Ths site is confusing...I never heard of a Mark 1;and they show a pic of a tang safety model....

Not a ruger historian as far as model numbers go but he is probably thinking the first iteration was the Mark 1(tang safety). Bob, I would call the guy if interested to see if they make it for the MK II
