I was just looking on Gunbroker.com and saw a Raptor rifle for around $325 or close too that. It is a good looking gun but i don't know anything about them and thought that you guys might. It was a 270. So if you all have one that you want to sell my girlfriend's dad wants a rifle in this caliber. Thanks for all the help. Ryan

I don't own one , but I have seen lots of post asking the same thing , and every time the general opinion is that they are CRAP .<P>Plus , I think Raptor arms went bankrupt , so if there is a problem you can't send it back to the factory to have them fix it .<P>For the same amount you could by a savage , and you would just have a junky stock "unless you got a laminated stock" , and a bad trigger (the same as you would get with a raptor only a bit better)<P>Or you could even get a Remington ADL or maybe a winchester at Walmart or K-Mart for around that price "if you find a good deal"<P>Regards: Treeratkiller<p>[This message has been edited by treeratkiller (edited February 12, 2001).]

I'm not sure Raptor is ka-put. I think they merged or got bought out be the New Charter Arms. Charter is advertising a B/A rifle that appears to be a Raptor clone, that is to say a Rem 700 clone, and the factories are around the corner from each other.<BR>Fit and finish leave something to be desired, but what do you want for an all stainless $250 gun? (FWI on early Raptors they were ss bbl's and e/n receivers)<P><A HREF="http://www.charterfirearms.com/" TARGET=_blank>http://www.charterfirearms.com/</A><P>------------------<BR>Lest not we forget, America is a Republic, NOT a democracy. I looked at one a couple of years ago and if my memory is correct it looked like a push feed Model 70. The quality was not good. Hit the pawnshops for good buys on Savages and Model 700s. Thanks...

Handled one briefly at a show once. Put it back down quicker'n I did the M710 the first time I handled one of them things. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />

Don't recollect ever seeing anything positive, anywhere, about the Raptor.

I remember seeing them in a Jerry's add a few years ago and my first thought was "what exactly do you get for so little money". I'm a firm beliver that in most cases, you get what you pay for. Since then, I've never heard anything that would pursuade me to purchase one. I second the idea of a Savage. For the money you can't go wrong. they're not glamorous but does a hunting rifle need to be? Another very good one to look at would be a Tikka. That'll likely be my next bolt rifle. Butterly smooth action and quality fit/finish. Shooting performance on both are excellant.
If this is for your girlfriends father, don't make a bad choice, you may regret it. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" /> (One the otherhand, if you're not good, you may want that jam-o-matic in his hands.) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Ryan...

To expand a little on the possibility of considering a Model 99 Savage as previously mentioned as a "possibility". The Model 99 Savage is in the midst of becoming a true American icon.

I use a 1953 Savage Model 99 (a late EG model) in .300 Savage for all my deer hunting and I don't think either the rifle or the caliber can be beat for deer out to 250-275 yards.

The .300 Savage cartridge using 180 grain bullets is easily capable of taking elk, moose and black bear at reasonable ranges while the use of 120 grain to 130 grain premium bullets turn the efficient .300 Savage into a great antelope rifle for long range shooting.

The rifle is a "classic" and handles like a dream. It's lever action is "butter-smooth" compared to most other lever actioned rifles and the .300 Savage, "father" of the .308 Win., is acknowledged by those who "know" as "THE" perfect deer cartridge because most hunting bullets offer outstanding performance at .300 Savage velocities while averaging 25%-30% less recoil than a .270 with equal weight bullets.

My handloads chronograph at average muzzle velocity of 2675 fps while giving an average of .6 or .7 inch, 3-shot groups @ 100 yards off the bench rest with the Busnell 3x-9x variable scope set on "9x".

Sighted in 2.75-inches high at 100 yards, the .300 Savage cartridge has a point blank range of 265 yards, meaning the bullet does not rise or fall more than 3 inches above or below the "line-of-sight" from the rifle's muzzle to 265 yards down-range which is a long shot for most hunters.

There's something to be said about hunting with a "classic" rifle in a "classic" caliber... and the Savage Model 99 in .300 Savages offers its owner a reasonably light, fast-handling, truly "classic", but very useful rifle for all occasions in a very reasonable price range.
