I have a M1917 Eddystone that has been sporterized, but it never had scope mounts installed. The rear site has been ground off and the action was rounded to match the front of the receiver. I know these things have been sporterized for 80 years and I'm wondering what mounts work best for the contour of the action.

When front matches rear, Remington 30 bases fit the contour.

Here is a Weaver fit page:

There is more to this than just thinking that if the radius matches, such and such bases will fit. One also has to take into account the requirement that the bases, and by extension the bottom of the rings, are level with one another.

Often if a receiver sight was used, the 'smith did not attempt to keep a standard difference between the rear bridge elevation and that of the receiver ring. In these instances, unless the rear is too high and can be ground down, the best option is custom bases. If this is not an option due to cost, shimming is next. However, one needs to make sure the shim is stable.

I have a 1917 Enfield with weaver bases, I can't recall the #s off the top of my head. I use Burris signature rings whenever possible and on the Enfield, I had to use the .020 eccentric inserts front and rear to start the scope off in the centered position.

Thanks guys. I was afraid that might not be easy. The local smith want's $100 plus the bases. He said he expects to destroy a set of taps if he does it. Apparently the old guy has some experience with these. So if I go through with it I want to make sure it's a job worth the money.

My smith gave up d/t'ing the front of my 1917 action as it was just too hard. I don't envy a smith trying to d/t one of those actions, it really needs to be spot anealed.
