Makes you think twice about hiking in at 4 AM and getting in your stand an hour before light.

You do not have to go "up" north to see this. Coastal South Carolina has a lot of these "Standing Bears". Had friends that used to hunt on a large piece of property @ 12 miles east of Myrtle Beach. They frequently had bears that heard them coming and ran up the nearest tree. Often they did not realize this until first light when they saw the bear looking at them at stand level from an adjacent tree. I guess feeders work for bears as well as deer.

You mean west of Mrytle Beach don't you. I've been there a number of times and I thought the ocean was east.

Had a friend who saturated some scent pads on his hunting boots before walking to his deer stand behind his house. Forty minutes later he hears what he thinks is a deer coming through the laurels -- turns out to be a black bear with its nose down on my friend's track. The bear never looked up an came to the base of the tree, sniffed a couple times and started to climb the tree. My friend finally yelled at him and boinked him on the head with his bow. This was in the "wilds" of central Massachusetts about 40 miles west of Boston.

We had fixed up an old dilapidated tree stand for my buddy one year, and when he went to get in it first morning, a bear had crapped all over the thing. He said it stunk so bad he wouldn't even go near it.

grinTher real treat is to spot a black bear in a "bears nest". They just LOOOVVVEEE beechnuts. Right around now if the beechnut crop is good, they will climb to a crotch high up and pull branchs in and break them so they can glom all the nuts they can reach this way. Looking up at it the whole thing resembles a huge nest. I got to see on doing it some years ago, but unfortunately I didn't have a camera. Damn black bear can climb a tree as fast as you can fall out of one.
