A TWRA officer I know killed hundreds of whitetail with the Federal Premium 85-gr. BTHP load in the line of duty. I've shot exactly one buck with that load (got too many other rifles) at about 90 yards through the ribs. He staggered two steps and died. Caliber Size entry and exit, lungs looked like a grenade had gone off in chest cavity.

The slower velocity handload you suggest may slow fragmentation...

I shot three deer last year with the Speer...all died promptly, two complete penetration, one bullet, or rather a jacket with a smear of lead recovered...basically good performance. Accuracy was excellent, and held up at distance..

Haven't used any yet. Have always used a 100gr load for deer. I am thinking hard about loading up some 85 gr. Barnes TSX. Have heard a lot of good about it.

I picked up a XS7 .243 this spring. The 85gr Sierra BTHP's have shot the best out of it followed by 70gr. NBT. I have decided to use the 85's for this season, so I have yet to see the performance end of the bullet at work. At the range the 85's over 38 gr. and 39 gr. RE15 is averaging 0.6" 3 shot groups at 100. My old Hodgdon manual shows the 38 gr. as max and m.v. of 3176. I am guessing less w/ 22" barrel and will chrono in mid-September. The lowest charge shown w/ RE 15 is 35 gr. at 2896. I am probably more recoil tolerant, but at 38 they don't have much kick in the XS7 to me. I bet a mid-load w/ RE15 would be a great starting point. The 85's have to be seated deeper than NBT's or E-tips so the bolt will close. My OACL with 85's is 2.655". I can pass along data for the 85's with other powders, the 90 gr. e-tips, and 70 & 80 NBT's if you decide to try them.

We've put a bunch of deer on the ground with the 85gr TSX. We have managed to recover 2 bullets, both on hard quartering shots. Picture perfect expansion, and the deer go down ASAP when hit by one.

+1 on the gamekings. Shoot great out of my 6mm and have given terrific blood trails and complete pass throughs without horrendous exit wounds. would the ink the 85 partition would be a great one too.

unless its a TSX type bullet, 85 is too light for 243... I say this having shot the partitions and early 80 grain soft points.... killed everything I shot at, but made big holes and big messes... they were not built for iffy shots.

Thats my take on it. 85 tsx seems to give the best of all the worlds.

For a long time, close to 20 years, I used the 85 grain Sierra HPBT Gameking, but after having a couple of failures, I switched to the Partition as my .243" bore bullet of choice for medium game. The 85 grain Sierra has been a very accurate bullet in nearly every 243 or 6mm rifle that I tried it in and it is a great varmint bullet, but (4ME) the Partition is a better/surer choice for deer.

As a ROT, I now prefer to use premium bullets for medium game in my .224" and .243" bore rifles. I have had really good luck with the 60 grain .224" and 95 grain .243" Partitions and can recommend them without any reservations.

95g Partition is simply unreal on deer. I killed two with the 85g Tripple shock, very impressive but the wound channel was larger on the 95g Partition. However....dead is dead.

I've killed lots of things with an 85 partition, and more things with a TSX...Never no problems with either...

My standard contribution to the 85g 243 threads. The 85 TSX out of a 243 is never the wrong answer, IMHO.

Busted both shoulders. My son and I were both shooting copper that day.

Was looking at playing with the 90 grain ballistic tip with an MV at a sedate 2400 to 2500 fps this season...anything I take where I hunt will be well under 200 yds..

I am loading up some 95gr BT to similar velocities for my daughter this fall. The youth rifle seems to like them better than the 85gr Sierra I have used in the past. They should kill her first deer just fine.
