Nothing like waiting until the last minute. My brother called me a bit ago and asked whether he should buy some 180gr Core-lokts for his 30-06 or Federal 180gr soft points. We're leaving for elk camp in the morning and he is heading to Walmart to buy a box of shells this afternoon. His rifle is currently sighted with 150gr ballistic tips. I told him to flip a coin, but he didn't like that answer.

Doesn't make much difference. The possibility of his rifle having even a close same POI with a 180 gr vs the 150 gr is slim.

Better tell him to get two boxes of the flavor of the day.... If he waited this long to buy them and shoot his gun, I dont see twenty rounds getting him sighted in and an elk killed..

These type of guys usually get up at 10AM, hike 200 yards form camp and shoot a 350-400 class bull

I'd tell him to get whichever is cheaper. The bullets are for all practical purposes the same.

+ 1...although I've found Federal factory stuff (from Fusion to Federal Premium to cheapo Wal Mart SP PS's) to be about the most consistently accurate factory fodder I've run...FWIW. The Federal will be cheapest, I imagine, so hopefully it will work out for him.

Tomorrow morning is the start of our five day bull elk rifle season, and I saw a line of guys buying their tags tonight. They've probably just been too busy practicing with their rifles to get into town until now....... Speaking of POI shifts, I once asked a co-worker what loads he shot in his .270 for deer and elk. He told me "I don't know-------Remington I think." I then asked 130gr or 150gr? He answered, "I don't know, maybe both?" Not everyone is a gun looney........

My buddy moved out to Montana and met a local cat hunter in a bar. They had great success hunting all types of game over the years and when I heard he hunted with my favorite, a 270, I asked what weight bullet does he use for elk. "Whatever is rolling around on the floor of the pickup". Yikes. The guy did hook my buddy and I up with a couple of nice speed goats last week in the Crow Res. so maybe non-rifle loonies have an edge we don't know about.

Not everyone is a gun looney........ Thats my brother. His rifle (only has one) is a plain jane Savage 30-06 with a $40 Tasco 3-9 scope. He wouldn't dream of having it sighted in any other way, than "dead on" at 100 yds. You gotta give him credit,he is a good shot and kills a deer just about every year.

I replace valve cover gaskets every 50K, if they don't need them sooner...

Sounds like my dad. I grab his rifle every time I get to his place, and always find a mix of shells in it. I always end up sighting it in for him and replacing all the old shells I can find w/ the newest ones I've loaded up for him. Doesn't seem to matter, he kills stuff every year, and it always ends up being some 10yr old reload he found in his pack/truck/etc..
