What does everyone recommend for a canvas soft rifle case?

Thanks,
Rob

Now about the Filson....what do you think of the padding inside? Is there enough to protect your rifle?

For me there is plenty of padding. The zipper is hard to beat. I hate wimpy zippers that hang up on every little thing. The bridle leather handle and sling are great.

What is your typical use for a rifle case?

I have not doubt about the quality of Filson...I wear a Filson Tin Cloth Packer coat and actually have a filson laptop case and both will last me forever.

I want it for tossing in the truck to go out hunting...right now I just have a 2 gun hard case, which is too big and cumbersome. I just want one that will last forever.

I only asked about the padding because of one of the reviews on the the Filson site made comment of the lack of it.

I have a Boyt, which seems well put together with quality materials. However, it bothers me that the zipper runs along the bottom of the case, where the weight of the rifle lays. I cannot figure out why it was designed to not take advantage of having the heavy canvas bear the load instead of stressing the zipper. Others make the cases so they naturally carry the rifle as a hammock folds around a person.

I have a couple boyt's and they are nice. The FILSON's cases are even nicer. The Filsons are more moisture resistant due to the wax finish on the outer material. The leather in the Filson cases is also of higher quality.

I also have a couple "SAKO" waxed cotton cases that are quality-wise about between the Filson and the Boyt. They are similar to the Boyt's in most ways but have a waxed cotton outer.

For my customn rifles I use a Fitted sks case for transport to the range etc. and the Filson cases where the hard case is too large and/or unwieldy.

If you wear Filson coats and Jackets I think you in the end are going to be best suited by the Filson soft cases. I'd like a couple more myself.............................DJ

Been using one for 13 years now...looks like it is 60 years old, been to Africa 5 times and Alaska and a couple other places...stitching in lining started to go a few years ago, sent it in to Boyt, Fixt it, no questions. Its been handy, has taken hard use, has protected as advertised and the company has stood behind it...

If this is the Filson you mean it seems expensive at $290 each!

Problem solved with the Boundary Lakes version . . . and a few extra dollars smile

harv3589;
I have a good friend who's hobby is patrolling flea markets and yard sales, mainly for old fishing lures.

Anyway, one day he brought me a Boyt case that he'd bought for under $10. Said it looked like something I needed. wink

We have a pile of soft cases, as my rifle de jour rides in one on the back seat of the Dodge when the girls are hunting. The Boyt is built about twice as good as all the other Canadian Tire types that we've got.

Anyway, another vote from BC for Boyt.

Good luck on your upcoming hunts Rob.

Regards,
Dwayne

A large 48" gun case by ACE holds a rifle with a bipod if wanted. The one I have has held up well. It has a tag Made in the USA!

ACE guncase 48" $28

Others that I use more often by Allen seem durable as well.

+2 on Boyts. Have used these for over 25 years, have five of them in various sizes. They breath well, wear well, protect well for a soft case. Leather trim (mine are the older light tan color), great quality. I have even stored several guns in them for over a year w/o opening them, and they've all been fine.
