It's what we do here. laugh
And the time savings is worth it. Spend more time shooting / spending with family and less time cleaning / dicking around. wink

Actually, you need to add hunting in there somewhere...

Went to the range yesterday with the T/C .50 CAL. and was going to check the scope. What a disaster of a range session, but it did remind me why I always shoot my rifles before hunting season. Yesterday before I started shooting the muzzleloader with the Blackhorn 209 and power belts, I made sure the gun was clean and dry. Out of about 10 trys I got the muzzleloader to fire one good time. The other times the bullet barely made it out of the barrel and I had to pull the breech plug and push the powder and bullet out on the other times. After convincing myself that yea it was the Blackhorn 209 that I just bought last year I decided to try some IMR White Hots that I bought last year. Every time I pulled the trigger the gun fired and I did get some decent groups with the White Hots.

My big question was could the Blackhorn 209 powder go bad so quick? I didn't think it would. It smelled strong and looked dry just like day one. I had stored it in a room in the house in a cool and dry location. After talking with some other guys on the net, I discovered that some people were having trouble with Winchester 209 primers and the Blackhorn 209 powder. They also were having ignition problems. I did not try any different primers yesterday, since the only ones I had were Remington Muzzleloader Primers. I had read on the container of the Blackhorn 209 where it said not to use primers that were called muzzleloader primers, but to use the regular 209 shotgun primers. At this point I am going to use the IMR White Hots since I am running out of time before deer season starts. They might not group as well but they should be good enough for my up close brush hunting location.

You guys have any idea or input on this. It had to be either the powder or the primers. I had almost decided it was the Blackhorn 209, but how could a container of that go bad in a year. Could it actually have been the Winchester 209 primers? They are about a year old also. Any input on this would be appreciated.

Change your primers. Try the full strength 209 primers by Federal. Don't use the soft 209 primers that are recommended for Triple 7.

I had perfect ignition with win 209 primers in my TC triumph but 50/50 ignition in my knight disc extreme with the win 209 primers. The problems in my knight came right after spit patch range cleaning it so some residue may have gotten in the breech plug opening. I was told to use CCI 209 magnum primers and since I swithched havent had one misfire.
On a side note has anyone noticed more blowback with the CCI magnum primers. I am noticing stuff hitting me in the face with my knight and the full plastic jackets. Some of the jackets are being reused so that may or may not have something to do with it?

I use CCI primers and have had no problems so far. I took a whitetail last week with my Omega, CCI primer, 100gr BH209 and a 300gr Thor. Through and through both shoulders.

Tasty backstraps BTW smile

Last I knew, 300's weren't available in ballistic tip. That was probably early summer.

I hunted south of Gunnison the 1st 5 days of ML. The days were hot and the elk we saw were above timberline. Not much rutting activity yet at that time.

I bought some BH 209 last spring to use in my TC Triumph. Using 110grs. of BH under a 250gr. Barnes EZ Load spitfire and a CCI magnum primer, I get incredible accuracy. Some 3 shot groups at the bench have been less than moa and never much more than an inch. I chronographed this load in my rifle. It averaged 1891 fps. In my friend's Tradition ML it averaged 1919 fps.
Though I didn't use BH last deer season, I did use the Barnes Spitfire with Triple7. With 3 shots I took 3 big doe. This year I will be using Black Horn.
