I am in the market for a lightweight rifle and have narrowed my search to either a Kimber 84m or a Weatherby Mark V ultra lightweight in caliber 7mm-08 rem. I have read bad and good reveiws on both. I would like feedback on both rifles and would love feedback from someone who has owned or fired both. I understand neither will be a bench rifle and I don't expect it to. I am interested in a great lightweight hunting rifle.

Personally...I'd buy a 700 Youth in 7/08 (has the standard contour 20" tube), then wrap a Ti take off around it. Be money ahead and it'll shoot lights out comped to the other two.

I can only comment on my WBY 7mm-08 ultra lwt. Picked up one on Gunbroker with Burris scope. Didn't touch it for about a year but decided to work up a few loads with 140 gr. Nosler BT. Every load was good but this gun seems to like 43 gr. of H414 (.382"). The rifle is super light and has superb balance. I know nothing of the Kimber and suspect most rifles in this caliber can shoot better than my ability. Oh, I also ran some Accubonds with the same powder and had identical results and POI.

I to was a longtime fan of the model 700 until I purchased a CDL in 280 rem. a couple of years back. After three factory recoil pads, that still keep getting gummy, flacking varnish, and less than expected accuracy I thought I would try another line. I did look into the 700 Ti but understand production on that model has stopped. A used 700 Ti is advertised locally for $1500.00,which is the price of a new weatherby and $350.00 more than a new Kimber. Keep the info coming it is greatly appreciated.

2-lugs trump both 6 and 9.

Ti 7-08's are throated more favorably than the Montucky and wear a slightly longer box. I'd go 1st gen Ti as THE Grail,but the Montucky after it and before everything else thus far mentioned.

I love my Montana. I'm sure the Weatherby is nice too. I know of one in 338/06 that the guy won't come down on. He is trying to sell a rifle that is brand new, yet several years old, that nobody makes ammo for. I don't care because I reload, but I'm in no rush to buy it an apparently nobody else is. It sure would be a nice rifle though. As soon as the 84L Montana comes out I would never spend 350 more on a Weatherby.

I own both Kimber and Weatherby, and I recommend the Weatherby Ultra-Light.

Thus the reason to always consider the source.................

How about a FN Model 70 Featherweight. They are cheap and very accurate.

Haven't had both, I have had an 84M in .308 that I wasn't happy with. I do have a Weatherby ultralight in 30/06 that I am happy with. Not saying either is better than the other but the weatherby has lived up to accuracy claims and better after some bedding. Just my opinion and a one gun each sample.

Several of us have been beating that drum pretty hard for awhile. Ironically, none of those non-shooting, non-functioning POS Kimber's ever seem to crop up on the classifieds....

does Kimber still make a 7-08 in the montana skin? O an yes I will sell you a .270 win Weatherby for cheap if you want one...

Have you handled both? The Kimber Montana feels like a club to me. Unbalanced and a really messed up fore-end curvature.

I went to the gun shop specifically to buy a Kimber until I held one. I ended up with the Mark V Ultra-Lightweight. Beautifully balanced, 24" barrel.... I have done very little load development thus far. But 100 gr. TTSXes over 51.0 gr of 4350 prints groups that can be covered by quarter (and often much smaller.......operator incompetence, no doubt) with boring regularity.

I have no experience with the Kimber, though I would like to change that soon. As for the Weatherby ULW, I have had a few in my hands and all shot sub moa with proper handloads and balance and carry very nicely. Remember though that all Mark V's are a long action and if you are going 7mm-08(great choice) you may want to go Kimber, the other is that the Weatherby carries a 24" tube as opposed to 22" in kimber. I see both as good deal in factory rifles for true lightweights. Both are well under 6 pds in standard rounds, to get that kinda weight elsewhere you are building or having built for more money

These 2 rifles seem to get the most flaming here on the 'fire, yet those who own and shoot either one regularly swear by them..I just don't get it
