Just picked up a 1899 H in 303 cal, S/N 1054xx. Fancy 3 point checkering on butt stock and forearm. Also has fine checkering on panels/slab area. Has 22 inch barrel and Jack front sight. This is just a shooter, been drilled and tapped and has wood relieved where an old redfield mount was located. Does anyone have pictures of savage checkering on the panel area. I have a house full of relatives/rugrats till Tuesday and will post pictures then of this rifle. Went to Kens site, Savage 99 to look at old 99's some of you folks have posted but they were no longer there. Thanks, Tom

Thanks for posting the pictures hclark. The panels on my rifle have the checkering around a diamond (similar to a New Orleans Saints logo) with the point facing towards the butt. I know I have seen this checkering pattern on other Savage rifles and was trying to confirm if it was factory. Will do some more searching. My rifle was made in 1910 with heavy round tapered 22 inch barrel cut flush at the end (no crown). It is a straight grip, steel butt plate, schnable forend. Checkering around the wrist is 3 point which is courser and deeper than normally seen. Don't know how to tell if it's 12 point, 18 point or whatever. I believe it is called A2 in Murray's. Have to do some more research, thanks, Tom.

C'mon all you Savage collectors tell me if this is factory checkering or not. All numbers match on this rifle but as stated before it's been drilled and tapped and as you can see the wood was relieved for peepsight on left side by tang area. Wood otherwise is in great shape. Tom

Tom,
My guess would be aftermarket. It appears too coarse and no double line edging are what concerns me, along with never having seen that exact pattern on a savage before. I'm sure Jed will pipe in with what it is.

Thanks for the response Blair. I have read that this type of checkering was offered mainly for a better grip while wearing gloves. Tom.

Looks like a well done non factory checkering. First off the checkering looks kind of course, 16 lines per inch or larger, very large diamonds, also I don't see this as one of the standard factory patterns in the Murray book. It is a shooter with non factory drill and tap, so enjoy it for what is, and go out and have some fun with it the range or in the woods. I have some good 303 loads if you get some dies.
