What is the best make and model for the 475 Turnbull cartridge?
also I am interested in cartridges similar in performance to the 475.

I am in general interested in a big bore (shoulder cannon) lever gun.

Other considerations, features and shootability and functionality of the model of rifle would be important (ie. frustrating safeties added to the rifle)

I think a 475 Turnbull would be fun to shoot

Personally I think the 450 Marlin is about as far as I want to take a lever....

Then move to a 375 Ruger or 458 Lott

I really like the idea of a 450 Marlin, its just the idea of that huge thumper by Turnbull sounds so awe striking.

Browning/Winchester 1886 replica's, better steel.

Had a 50-110 Win done on one by Turnbull last year, It wears a 28" McGowen brl and handles 525 hard cast @1850 real easy.

The newer replicas of each have better steel in them than an original 1886, However an original in good cond. would be to valuable for me to strip for a build.

The 1886 will give Your builder plenty of working room for Your custom project.

Atomic, forgot one thing, You can look around and find an older Browning replica that doesnt have a tang safety or a goofy cross-bolt safety.

The old standard hammer safeties have been gittin it done dang near 150 yrs. now.

Yes quite a thumper indeed, Got a bud that pushes the 525's to 2200. 1850 will do me just fine w/ that crescent steel butt.

Ive only busted a coupls piggies w/ this rifle, but I did take a 7pt WT w/a buds 50-110 using the 500 gn woodie bullet the year before I had mine built.
Clean rib hit, but showed some expansion. The 525's on hogs are doziers, if You can angle the shot to keep it in em' for a ways.

Thanks, Gunner. I've been meaning to talk to Dougie Turnbull for a couple years, every time I see an article on his stuff in one of the gunzines. Looks like I'll have to talk to him serious-like now.

We arent using Kodiaks any more..They cant keep up with demand.

Swift A-Frames, 450 grainers...and Ill tell ya, working with Bill at Swift is a breath of fresh air..the guy is truly a perfectionist.

We just got the first sample bullets and in an hour or so, we are touching them off with various weights of powder to check feeding and extraction.

First Browning/Winchester model 86 (new ones), second model 71.

I met Turnbull at IWA shot in Germany. Nice job and fair price.

I have a custom 71 in .50Ak. It launches 500grs Woodleigh at 2000fps without pressure problem. Shot some water buff with. The 475Turnbull interest me a lot...Maybe next year.

This summer I ordered from Cabela's online a new Winchester 1886 in 45-90. Needless to say, I was greatly disappointed when I saw the lawyer induced tang safety. I'm contemplating selling it and ordering a Turnbull 1886 in the 45-90 that is a FULL replica of the original Winchester 1886. In other words, sell the Japanese model and buy a REAL American made model.

Thanks Kennesaw, I knew I wanted to lean on this cartridge a bit, hence the replica re-do, an original '86 in 50-110 is much to valuable to hunt very hard with ie saddle scabbard and such.

Would have to change that rifle butt to a shotgun style if it were mine.

If ya run those 525's up around 2100 fps you can start to feel that steel butt a bit , recoil at 1850 fps is surprisingly modest.

I hear Turnbull is using the Chiappa guns now. He had some say in the way they were built, at least the ones sent to him.

In this replica '86 I run RL-15 and the Cast Performance WFN-GC bullets.

I looked long and hard and found a Browning high grade in 45-70 without the tang or cross-bolt safety to do the conversion on.

Gunner - I've got a Browning 71 in .475 Turnbull, and like the gun a lot. It came with a bunch of ammo, so I haven't had to reload yet, but that will next. Mine had a nice fitted recoil pad on it, but it looks like a knucklehead trimmed the bottom end of it with a pocket knife. I have a new limbsaver pad to fit on it when I get a chance.

My rifle had the Burris Fastfire on it, but will be changing that out for a peep sight.

I'd be surprised if Turnbull was converting the Chiappa guns as a regular-offered rifle, my rumor control tells me that the parts don't interchange as well with other 1886 copies. I visited his shop a couple years ago, he had enough Winchester copies in stock to keep the shop going for a quite a while.

That 475T will get it done. I shot a decent WT buck with a Buds 50-110 with a Woodleigh 500 gr FPSP before I had mine built, they are addicting and just plain fun to load for and shoot.

And they lay a helluva wallop on whatever ya hit with em too.

Would anybody consider the 38-55 a "big" bore? I just acquired a Model 94 Trail's End Hunter, and have very little knowledge of the round. I've been doing the usual Google searches and picked up some details, and it will be in the stand this Fall for deer.

I shoot 265 gr Cast Performance and Beartooth FN-GC bullets in my M-94 38-55 sized to .380, and with a good stiff dose of RL-7 those slugs run an easy 1885 fps with no leading, excellent accuracy through the Lyman peep, and no bullets recovered on game to date.

I would consider the 38-55 WCF a medium bore, and even a 375 H&H as a heavy medium, just my HO.

I have removed the peep sight and from this rifle and installed a Smith Enterprises rear ladder barrel sight, and had Sharpsguy make me a copper penny front sight.

Am working up a load with a .513" 700 grain grease groove flat nosed bullet with a .320" meplat using black powder, it chronos at 1250 fps with a hefty charge of Swiss 3FG lit with a CCI-250 primer, it is extremely accurate at 100 yards so far with groups averaging 1.5 to 2"s, I can't shoot iron sight anything any better than that.

All without wiping between shots, fouling and function is a non issue with this short nosed bullet, still filing the front sight to get the bullet landing about 5 to 6"s high at 100 yards with a 6 O'Clock hold, this chit is fun!

Hello Jack, it's a McGowen 20 twist octagon barrel cut to 28"s.

Shot it again a bit this evening before the dang cow migration got between myself and the target stand.

Gunner, that should handle some heavy slugs and be a hog hammer of the highest order.I've been eyeing a uberti 1876 in 50-95, little more in my price range.

That '76 will be fun too, I'd look at the twist and see if it would stabilize the 515 gr cast lead flat point bullet and not lean on it too hard, I'm not familiar with the '76's strength.

My 50-110 may have to accompany me on a trip to Africa some day, I'm about to go shoot some more this morning when light gets good and before it's 100+ degrees.
