This is a question you remington guys might know. Does this rifle come with a run of the mill factory barrel or do they come with a premium barrel? I am looking at a stainless version. I would hate to pay all of that money for a regular 700 dropped into a McMillan stock.

Just my opinion but I think they are way over priced . You can build a custom with premium components of your choice, for what they want for the KS.

Depends if you're looking a a new one or a used one.

If new you won't even get the McMillan stock since they no longer use Mickeys on them.

If you're looking at used I think they are without question the finest hunting rifles ever made by Remington.

Great stocks, perfect barrel contour, and superb balance.

I paid Tikka T3 money for mine and it is by far my favorite and most accurate rifle.

Yeh a great used price is fine,but not new price. I bought one super cheap at a gunshow. They are a very nice rifle but not worth the retail price.

The one I am looking at has the McMillan stock. Seeking the manufacturer of the barrel. What would be a good NIB price?

Based on how the ones I owned shot I would bet it was a custom shop barrel or a select barrel. The contour is different then a regular 700 standard contour.

FWIW, the custom shop sporters have to shoot under an inch (30 cal. and under) before they leave the factory. I've heard all kinds of stories about the barrels from button rifled in the custom shop to aftermarket barrels from Hart and Krieger have been used. In the end, if it shoots (never heard of one that didn't shoot great) does it really matter who's barrel is on there ?

RD that is true. My understanding is that in the past they did use Krigers and Harts or Douglas on the KS.

A pal of mine dotes on them;we shot his 06 one day and I sat there pouring round after round into a ragged hole...I'm talkin about 15 shots ...and it became about an 1 1/4" in size only because of my sloppy shooting....this thing was accurate.

I looked down the barrel and it looked to be a 4 groove....he called Remington and they traced the numbers...it was a Krieger tube! Pretty cool!

Today I guess they don't do that.I guess you never know what you will get with the KS, but I have never seen a bad one.

I had a stainles Custom KS mountain in .280 Rem several years back, I think it cost around $1300.00 NIB I thought even at that price it was way too high for what I got, the rifle did shoot great but I never did warm up to the extremely slick non checkered stock and I never was a fan of a blind magazine, so I sent it down the road for $950.00...............Hillbilly.

I believe they use remington barrels but they are chambered and threaded one at a time by a gunsmith.

My first 7mm Rem Mag was a KS, incredibly accurate, just as accurate as any custom make.
This one had a Brown stock.

Like an idiot I sold it.

I was informed by a represenative from Remington a few years ago that the KS barrels were not run of the mill 700 barrels. They were hand picked blanks and machined and chambered by the custom shop. So definitely NOT run of the mill 700 barrels.

Do they run the regular Mountain Rifle contour? Or is it a different contour for the KS?

Different contour than a mountain rifle. I tried to drop my 30-06 Ti (mountain rifle contour) into an original McMillan KS stock, and it wouldn't go. Seems as if the diameter at the end of the stock is similar.....but different for about the first 6 inches or so.

The KS contour is unique and IMO just about perfect for a great shooting, nicely balanced lightweight rifle.

They (KS) are 24" barrels right? Standard Mountain Rifle is 22"? Or were Mt rifles 22" or 24" depending on caliber & configuration?

KS barrels were 24 inches.

I've owned 2 KS rifles: stainless 300WM & blued 280. Big Green told me the barrels were hand selected and not standard production line tubes. Also said .30 and smaller must shoot sub moa before leaving factory. They both shot sub moa with good factory fodder. Traded the 280 off and hunted with the 300WM for several years before selling it. Wouldn't pay asking prices for another .... too easy to build a custom built by Kampfeld, Coleman, Bryant, etc., that shoots much better IMO. Good Luck on your choice.

I would not buy a new one today, but a used one at a good price is always a safe bet,because rifle looneys are constantly trading into "better mousetraps", and rarely shoot enough to do any harm to one.

My .260AI SS Mtn. rifle has a factory barrel that I did a comprehensive breakin, 50 shots, before I expected any real accuracy. It was rechambered from .260 to .260AI by Darrel Holland. It will shoot under an inch @ 100 yds. off the bench. As far as the KS stock goes I would welcome a little lighter stock as mine is the laminated one. I will say that I had Holland true the action and ad a competition recoil lug. This all said I probably have close $$ to what a custom shop MTN. rifle would cost. I load 130 gr. Bergers with H4350 and get aprox. 2900 @ muzzle. I could load it hotter but this is the accuracy load. MTG
