My son and I use wire line for striped bass. There are certain areas where the trolling depth is critical. It is essential to know how much line is out. In other areas other line settings are used. Some cut a length of line and use swivels with mono line. We don't want to do that.

My son saw a product in a catalog to mark the line. It was a type of nylon thread with sticky glue on it that was wrapped around the wirel line at certain intervals to provide a "tell tale" indicator of how much line was out. Does anyone know about it and where to get it ?

Clamping a lead sinker on the line causes it to hang in the rod guides.

Any other suggestions for marking the wire line ? Has anyone used paint ? What type and how long does it stand up ?

Thanks !

wetibbe,

I have been using wireline for strippers , tuna, wahoo for over 15 years and the best thing I have found to work for me has been , the inner wires of telephone wires ( the funky colored ones found inside of a large group) . Twist them into the wire and finish off with barrel wraps lik you would on a shark rig. I would also recomend the top shot of 80 lb mono snelled to the wire (no swivel to get caught up) . This will aborb shock on the hit , remember wire has no strech, it will also be easier to untangle or cut off in the event of twisting or knots created by multiple hookups of bluefish . Attach a swivle to the end of the mono to connect the bunker spoons and 9er rigs.

Wildone:

Thanks. I'll pass that on to my son and we will give it a try.
