Home Forums Hunting & Shooting Hunting Rifles 257 Wby Ammo Question - Factory Wby vs. Nosler Custom vs. Hornady

There aren't too many companies that load for the 257 Wby. I'm interested in the 110gr Accubond (which both Nosler and Wby offer), and the Hornady 110gr Interbond. I am also open to other options. The use will be for pronghorn and mule deer, maybe a sheep/goat hunt one of these days! I'm not a reloader, so.....

Questions:
1) The Nosler and Wby 110gr accubond have two differences: Price and Ballistics. The Nosler rounds are considerably cheaper but don't match the Wby ballistics even though it's the same bullet.
2) The Hornady website has little information on their 110gr offering. Does anybody have any info?

Any other ammo recommendations or places to buy?

My take on that, make your own. Don't pay $60 a box for ammo. I have a .257 Wby and haven't bought the first Wby ctg. I roll my own, using new WW cases in 7mm Rem Mag. One trip thru the RCBS FL .257 die and out comes a .257 Wby case. Of course, I use plenty of Imperial Die Wax. I've read that the WW cases will shoot high pressure loads longer than the softer Norma brass and the primer pockets will stay tight longer. Can't say for sure, having only used WW brass. Just what I read. The formed cases are slightly shorter than factory .257 Norma/Wby. Just means I don't need to trim. I'll throw them away before they're too long.

I cant figure out why Rem/Win/Fed wont make ammo for this round. Heck, Remington even chambered a batch of guns for it. It seems like this round is becoming more popular every year, why wont the big ammo companies spit some out? Then, we could at least buy cheap, properly headstamped brass.

I roll my own, so only care about the cheaper brass.

Best advise I could give you is to start handloading...

I shot all of Weatherby's offerings out of my Vanguard.

The best groupings came from the 120 gr Nosler Partitions.

I used it to pole axe two Columbian Blacktails @ 370 & 500 yards last year.

Very happy with it's performance.

Another thought on the performance differences between the Weatherby factory ammos vs. Nosler and Hornady:

Could the Hornady/Nosler numbers be based on a 24" barrel?

Rolling your own is definitely the way to go.

But...since you don't,

I shoot 4 Weatherby rifles regularly. All belong to my father in law and not me, but I do shoot and load for them often.

In all 4, .30-378, 7mm, .340 and .460, the Weatherby ammo shoots far better than any other we have tried.

In the case of the .30-378 and .340, we can't match it's accuracy with handloads.

I can't recall how far off the listed velocity was from actual, but I don't remember it being overly exaggerated.

If price isn't a huge issue, and hand loading is out the question, I don't see how you'd go wrong with Weatherby's ammo.
