I am looking to get a custom leather hunting holster/rig for a S&W model 629 4 inch. I believe what I want is a "tanker" type holster to be carried just below the chest as not to interfere with my backpack or rifle sling.
Does anyone have any reccomendations as to which maker may best accomodate my needs. Anyone have or using such a rig. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Check out Mike Barranti's leather goods site! He has a chest rig that was inspired by one of our own Campfire members! Keith

Cowboyneeds.com sells Triple K leather at great prices. If I understand your needs, items #275 and #276 should work well for you. They sell them as a combo deal for $68.48. Usually $91. I've used Triple K leather for a long time and love it. Cowboyneeds.com is a family run outfit with great prices and customer service you just can't beat. All the questions I ever asked were answered immediately by the owner himself. Hope it works for ya.

El Paso Saddlery has an exact reproduction of the "Tanker", an excellant holster. You also may want to check out Mernicle holsters, they have a really nice shoulder rig for hunting handguns, as a matter of fact, I have one for my Ruger Bisley.

Take a look at Simply Rugged. Great holsters and there is a "chesty puller" conversion that will allow you to set it up like you're considering. Same holster can be worn as a pancake without it. http://www.simplyrugged.com/chesty-puller-conversion-system/I have one of their Sourdough Pancakes on the way. JCM

I have an El Paso Saddlery tanker for a 4" model 629. It's perfect as far as I'm concerned. I bought a Simply RUgged for a Ruger Blackhawk and the shoulder strap was way to skimpy. My wife replaced it with a much better one.

+1 on the El Paso Saddlery "Tanker". I've got a 4" model 57 "Mountain Gun", fits the gun great and makes field carry with backpacks a breeze.

El Paso Saddlery Tanker, with my Ruger Bisley Blackhawk, 45 Colt. Rides close into the body, covered easily by a jacket and easier to draw from than a shoulder holster. Can't be beat, in my opinion.

The only one I have tried is the El Paso Tanker, but it carried my 6" Anaconda very well. As has been said it is easy to draw from and I never noticed the weight of the Anaconda.

Thanks guys, I am finding some pretty good stuff here that I didn't even find when I googled custom leather holsters. Just one more reason to be a member of the campfire with some great resources available. You just have to ask. Much appreciated.

DITTOS! Like that El Paso stuff, field holsters for a 1911 and in south paw mode as well. They also make all the classic military 1911 holsters in south paw mode as well. Can't go wrong there.

My El Paso Tanker for 4" N Frame: You can adjust it further around the front or to the side as you prefer. Much more comfy than a hip holster for days afield IMO.
