I am pretty sure of the answer but want to confirm for sure...will a Remington 600 accept a Remington 700 barrel? I have an old .308 Rem 600 (actually 2 of them) and would like to re-barrel to something else. Besides the barrel, is there anything else I'd need? The Rem 600 has a spacer between the barrel and receiver that sticks up alot higher than a 700...does that matter? Thanks for your help!

Ken,

The spacer that sticks up is actually the recoil lug. Yes, the threads and barrel shank specs are the same. I don't know why one couldn't use the recoil lug from a M-700... IMHO, it'd likely look better... I've never bothered to measure them, but they look to be the same thickness...

Woops, the Grasshopper beat me to it, BUT:

i can't answer for sure on the 700/600 interchangability (i've heard they are though) but the 'spacer' is the recoil lug, and the M600 ones are set up that way to provide a recoil stop for optics mounts. a neat feature.

I don't know why the Remington 600/660/600 Mohawks had that recoil lug with the hump on it, but I don't like that hump and always use a non-humped 700 recoil lug when I rebarrel a 600/660/600 Mohawk.

I have 3 600/660/600 Mohawks rebarreled with 700 take-off barrels; a 22" 700 BDL 257 Roberts, a 22" 700 MR 260, and a 24" 700 SPS stainless 308.

I've never seen those old Redfield scout scopes on a 600/660, but do have a couple of the old Leupold Detacho mount bases for them.

yea, i have another one of these (NOS) with the optional rear sight built in.

i'm thinking this rifle/scope/mount gave Jeff Cooper the idea for the Scout rifle. mine was set up this way in the '60s.

Is the magazine box on a 600 long enough for 257 Roberts? I don't know why I would think it wouldn't be, but thought I'd ask. Thanks.

the 700 barrels I have had put on a 600 were 180 degrees out of rotation when snugged up ie. front sight pointing at the ground an issue if you have sights or want the printing on the barrel where it should be

That is why we have lathes, finish reamers, headspace gauges, etc. I almost always have to do a little trimming to get the roll stamps to end up in the right place.

The 600/660 use the same length magazine box as the 722 and short action 78s, 700s, 725s, etc. The longest bullet that I have tried in it was a 115 or 117 grain Hornady factory load and they fit and fed just fine. I mostly load 75 grain VMax for that rifle, so COAL limits aren't an issue that I encounter with that combination of components.

Yes, that 700 CDL-SF 24" stainless barrel is installed on a SA 700 BDL SS receiver with silver colored alloy 700 BDL SS bottom metal, a McSwirly McM Hunter (Hunter Green & White), Warne bases & rings with a Leupold VX1 4-12x40. It shoots very nice groups with the 75 grain VMax, 100 grain BT, and 100 grain Partition loads that I have worked up for it.

I really like the 24" 700 CDL-SF barrel in the McM Hunter style stocks and currently have 3 of them in 243, 257 Roberts, and 260.
