Was at a shop today and found a rifle that according to the tag is a Parker Hale 98 mauser in .308 Win. The receiver looked like a commercial FN mauser with the side safety. The stock was walnut with a cheek rest, rosewood tip and grip cap. The floor plate was bdl style with the release inside the trigger guard. It had mounts and a scope on it so I could not see any logos on top of the receiver. There was no company logos or model numbers on the side of the receiver and the only marking on the barrel was the caliber stamp. Price was $449.95 and the gun was in very good condition. I'm interested in it more for what could be done with it. I assume it's a standard length action but am making this inquiry to find out more about the gun. Any info would be appreciated.

They are all standard length actions, so this would could become a 30/06 or 300 WinMag - and should!

That is a pretty decent deal for one. I will kick in some money on it for you if by so doing you will dump your A-bolt(s).

I'm actually thinking 35 Whelen would be nice. Got a good laugh on your offer. Appreciate it but will have to decline. I only get rid of something when I'm displeased with it's performance. So far none of those A-bolts have caused me any heart burn. I know ya'll hate them but I can live with that. I have some I hate to.

Yeah, a 35 Whelen or better yet a 358 Norma would work nicely and be a fun upgrade.

They are good Mauser actions, certainly good enough to rebarrel to most anything that will fit in the magazine. The stocks that I have seen on them have varied greatly. Some of the wood was light colored and Weatherbyesque, others with more classic lines, etc. certainly due to models, whims and suppliers.

Saw one once that was a .270 with a featherweight contour barrel 22", open sights, grip and cheekpiece similar to an FN and a forend that had a beavertail with no checkering. It was a factory stock, neat rifle which I couldn't talk the owner out of. mad

Haven't seen another like that since.

Thanks to Fish Head for the Parker Hale link. I couldn't find this rifle in any of the pictures I've seen there. Most of the ones I saw had a Weatherby look to them. The stock on the gun at the shop had a more classic style and a 22 in. barrel without sights.
