Hodgdon's Superformance powder.

Anybody tried it in the 6.5X55?
Results?
Do you have a favorite powder for the old Sweed?

Thanks,

Jim

Odd this should pop up. Dad and I were talking about the very subject last night. No load data from Hodgdon, checked burning rate and it seems to run right along with H4831. Might try some medium loads with H4831 data if I can convince Dad to reload a few.

H4350, N550 are good powders with the 120's.

My Sweed is the only rifle I currently have that I'm interested in trying it in. Thought maybe others may ahve run some through and would have results worthy of discussion. I'm hesitant to buy a can just to chrony a dozen loads.
I am liking the results I get with H4350 and 120-125 grain bullets.

Well, Dad happens to have a can he lifted from the local shootatorium for $20.00. Hasn't used any since little load data is available. Might see if he'll give it a go.

I have had decent results with IMR-4350 and Reloder 22 in my 6.5x55, primarily with the 129 gr and 140 gr Hornady SP bullets. My primary powder though is Accurate Data 86 Extruded, which is a cannister version of their old 3100 powder, now discontinued. It works well with bullets from 120 through 160 grains.

Hornady added 6.5x55mm to the Superperformance product list. I plan to get a box to try when I can find it. W/o chrono, it would have to be compared with other loads based on where it impacts targets at different distances.

Ramshot shows some good performing loads in 6.5x55mm with max pressures around 55k psi. Their 4.5 data set has all of the 6.5mm on the same page. Overall performance and peak pressures can be scanned at once. Most taken in 24" barrels.

Still looking for anyone who has tried reloading Superformance in the 6.5X55. How did it perform?

Thanks,

Jim

Thanks Marlin nice to know!!!! I did see that they are getting 2700 fps at the muzzle and at 500 yards a 45 inch drop. I'm not sure they use the same blend as the Superformance put out by Hodgdon's. That version of the powder is the same used in six of Hornady's calibers. Although, I would think they meant cartridges and not calibers.

Shannon over at Hornady Tech Support said he can't say if its the same blend but if its not they can work with you to obtain the same performance using different powder / load combinations in a couple of months when they have more data.

Have a great day!!!

I have built a 6.5X55 on a Ruger #3 frame, Pac Nor 24inch stainless barrel, 1 to 8 twist. It is shooting various 120 1nd 125 bullets on the edge of 3000 fps quite easily with H4350 powder.

I found all the parts including some hacked up aftermarket wood in an Oat Meal box at my local gun shop. I'm still working on loads and am always curious about the newly developed stuff. That's why I'm asking about the Superformance powder results.

Thanks

Jim

Heck I am running 140 grains bullets at 2800 FPS+ using plain old 4064 or RL 15... and several other powders in that range... and showing little need to change due to accuracy achievements.

Berger sent some data for their 130 and 140 grain VLD. Powders that gave faster speeds included MRP, RL22, WXR. and Magnum.

Loads were generated via Quick Load. Lost the table format, but readable.

http://www.ballisticstudies.com/Knowledge+Base/6.5x55.html has some interesting info on the 6.5SE and several other calibers. In the hand loader section it says that Berger VLD are annealed, which may partly explain why they work as game bullets.

Thanks for that information. The info. about the 6.5X55 was an interesting read. My curiosity is really about the Superformance performance in the Sweed.

Appreciated,

Jim

Hornady info on their load. 140-gr SST gives 2735 fps.

6.5 x 55 Swedish Mauser 140 GR SST Superformance
Test Barrel (24") Velocity (fps) / Energy (ft-lbs)
Muzzle 100 200 300 400 500
2735/2325 2569/2051 2408/1803 2254/1579 2105/1377 1961/1196
Trajectory (inches)
Muzzle 100 200 300 400 500
-1.50 1.90 0.00 -7.90 -22.60 -45.20

Ramshot shows 140-gr Nos P at about 2775 fps from 24" barrel.
