I was just reading some online ads for alligator hunting. Most of the websites had different opinions about what caliber is needed to kill an alligator. The opinions ranged from 22LR to 338 Win Mag. I know alligators vary greatly in size, but for a company to tell a potential client that a 338 is needed is hilarious!!! A good 270 Winchester or even 30-06 would dispatch any alligator. I just love reading opinions like this!

105 Howitzer point blank with canister!

If you are hide hunting then a big treble hook baited with rancid meat hung about a foot above the surface of the water. This so they have to leap and grab thus setting the hooks deep. At that point a well placed .22lr will do the job.

Never just shot them in the water as it is too dangerous and they are hella tough to kill.

I've drew many Gator tags & killed quite a few with a .38 & 9mm between the eyes. This one here is 8' & largest one taken was 11'.

Caliber don't matter much. It is depending on how you are hunting them. If you are fishing like T described a 22 is fine. If you are snipeing them like from river or high bank or up a tree over water you have got to have something that you are able to hit a spot @ the size of a lemon with at what ever distance you shoot.

You just shoot an alligator you will never get him because unless you hit the brain it will not die very quick.

I watch the show Swamp People each week. They hunt them mostly for their hides and they use 22 LR and 22 Mag.

I can't help but think that a .30 caliber M1 Carbine or one of the new Ruger 77/357's would be just perfect. Speculation on my part though, as I have never hunted an alligator.

We use a 22 mag with hollow points. The bullet won't go through the head and ruin the valuable hide on the underside. Hit them in the brain and they just sink. Miss, and you'd best not be standing in the coils.

I did mine in with a gig, harpoon and .357 mag, the last applied via bangstick. Good times.

My ten-year-old nephew took his first one (a nine-footer) with a 20 gauge slug--worked good!

we kind of use whatever is handy at the time....on this one it was .45 with Hydra-shoks, but hardball seems to work about the same.
