Seems to be a shortage of loading manual load data for the 75 Gr A-Max other than Hornady manual and it looks to be very conservative. Rifle is a Savage 9 twist Predator - would like to use that bullet for longer shots because its B.C. is 0.435.

Rifle seems to stabilize 75 A-Max bullets OK with max listed H4895 loads, but 3-shot groups are no better than 0.410 ~ 0.650. I will load some R-15 next.

Rifle groups 69 SMK's with a stout 2230 load about the same.

Anyone have any good 75 A-Max loads for standard 223 Rem? I plan to shoot as is this year but may AI for next year.

Thanks

I my Savage, I have found that a charge of 24 grains with a host of powders in the mid range burn rates give stellar accuracy with that bullet...

those powders include: IMR 4895, IMR 4320, Varget, IMR 4064, W 748, RL 15, H 4895, AA 4064, AA2700.. and a host of others..

I have also found the 75 grain HP is more accurate than the A Max...

Thanks.

I just loaded powder ladder and group size checks with RL-15.

I have most of the powders listed on hand and am seeking velocity as well as group size...

The HO #2279 75 Gr. BTHP has a lot of data in several manuals...and is grouped with the 75 Gr. A-Max in the Hornady manual with the same charges weights..

I'll run the programs to see what a drop of 0.040 in B.C. means.

Thanks, BarryC and Seafire.

I'm just getting ready to run some R-15 myself. If I can get a nice day to do it! Going to start with the 69gr. SMK first.

Was able to finally make it to the range yesterday. Not sure if this helps anyone. I'm still deciding whether or not to try the 75's.

Savage 10 Predator. This is what mine likes:

2.26 COAL
rem. 7 1/2 BR
69 SMK
25.3 gr. Varget @ about 2700 fps. (a little slow in my book)

Tried a mix yesterday came to this conclusion:

2.26 COAL
rem. 7 1/2 BR
69 SMK
25.2 gr. R-15 (one ragged hole) Chrono was down so unable to get velocity.

Roger, If you get your 75's to shot and are willing to share info I'd love to know. Eric

Eric -

Will certainly do. So far both loads with the 69 SMK and the 75 A-Max / H4895 group about the same. I have since made up several more test loads with the 77 TSX, the HO 75 HPBT, and coming soon the HO 69 HPBT.

I have made up a powder ladder with the 75 A-Max and 24.1/RL-15 - and hope to get to the range on a low wind day next week. And made up RL-15 same charge loads but with different jump lengths. I have been loading the 75 A-Max to the lands - that COL is 2.455" in this newer rifle - which is a length to caliber of 1.913" which is all that the magazine will allow. I will try some 10 thou' jam loads that I will load with my fingers.

Thank you for your information.

BTW -the 69 SMK/24.2/2230/Win brass/205Fed load shot in the 2's in my other Savage 9 twist and a pal's identical rifle. Sometimes better - but so far this rifle - a Predator MAX-1 - does not seem to like that load. Different reamers, I suspect. And the barrel in this rifle is no prize.

Oops -

Correction.

That's Hornady 68 Gr HPBT, not 69 Gr.

Never trust an old man's memory.

Thanks

The 75gr Hornady HPBT over 24.0gr Varget in my 26" Savage 12FV barrel puts 5 shots in .4 @ 100yd...and I'm still working on my trigger skills. Not sure of velocity, though.

75gr A Max and Benchmark works well in my savage. 2950ish for speed and all holes touching for 5 shots. If you hit around 3000fps primer pockets get loose.

Got my chronograph up and running and found this load averaged 2826fps with 10 rounds fired...and despite very good accuracy at 100yd the ES and SD was unacceptable at 84 and 23. Its entirely likely that was due to poor reloading form and worn-out RP brass; some new Lapua brass is waiting in the wings.

For comparison, the Hornady 68gr HPBT averaged 2955fps using 24.5gr Varget, with ES of 26 and SD of 11. Accuracy was good but not quite as good as the 75gr...though the sample size was quite small at only 4 rounds tested.

Oh yeah...CCI-400 was the primer.
