I may ask my wife if she always wanted a rifle to take to the range, do load development for etc, and when she says NO, I'll send off my check for one of these rigs for her. And then I'll borrow it.

The 20 inch barrel would be fine by me. The 17-18 in barreled cavalry carbines were what thrilled me about the Swede in the first place.

My first Swede had a 20" barrel. Never had any trouble killing stuff with it.

Well if I was in the market for a 6.5 x 55, I have a sako. I would buy the ruger, to a bedding and trigger job, mount a good 4x or 6 x fixed power on it, zero it in and go shoot stuff. While I like 24 inch barrels on my guns, I would live with a 20. In fact It would take maybe two or three shots to get over it.

I realize those sorts of velocities aren't enough to kill anything, but they do punch nice holes in paper out to several hundred yards.

I shot a 120 pound ram with a 129 Hornady going 2650ish out of my 18" barreled 94 Swede sporter (no, I did not sporterize a stock 94 - I got it already chopped on...). It went completely through and dropped the animal within 15 yards. Heart/lung shot.

I don't worry about getting top velocity much any more. Just match the bullets to the velocity.
