I have been feeding an old rifle that I was TOLD was a 300 belted Newton with necked up and fireformed 7mm RemMag brass, which works OK, but the way the brass looks coming out of fireforming I THINK that what I have is a rifle that was chambered in 30 Newton and has been fed re-sized H&H based ammo all these years up to when I inherited it for lack of anything else to use in it. Will do a cerrosafe chamber cast soon, but would love to get my hands on one 30 Newton cartridge or piece of brass as well. Will trade for or buy it, not looking for charity. Just to satisfy my natural curiosity, what is the rifle?

My then greaat uncle (married my Grandmother after they both became Widow /widower so then Granpa Tom) had several rifles built for he and his wife back when he was making lot of money as a rock truck owner/operator/driver back in the early 1950's. All three were built on FN Mauser commercial actions by a then famous gunsmith in California named Ray Acheson. One was a 257 Roberts, for my little in size but BIG in spirit and ability Aunt Marie. Another was built to be his all around deer rifle and is a 270. Those two went to his son and Grandson, correctly so. The other was to be his gun to take to Alaska someday for bear and moose which he never did. He always said it was a 300 Belted Newton. I made up some ammo for it and gave them and the dies to his son but the son does not hunt much anymore and later suggested that I should own it and that he would let me trade him for it, just wanted a gun he could buy ammo for so he got a Winchester XTR in 300WBY and I ended up with Grandpa / Uncle Toms rifle. It had and has old adjustable scope bases for the then common non adjustable scopes so I found a couple of non adjustable Balvar 2.5-8x scopes and mounted the nicest and cleanest one up on the rifle. Also had to add a spacer and a thick recoil pad so the gun would fit me. Gruncle Tom had thick, but short arms and shoulders.

All three got real Ebony forend tips and grip caps as well as real ivory spacers. How it was done, back then, if going all out top flight custom.

In firing loads made up for the rifle when supposing it to be a 300 BELTED Newton, the cases expand to nearly the diameter of the belt right ahead of the case web. Sooooo... what I PROBABLY have is a 30 Newton that the gunsmith and others simply fed belted brass sized to be 'close' in chamber fit. All of the ammo I got with it, though, is unfired. Uncle / Grandpa Tom never took the trip to Alaska so I have a like new custom build from the eary 1950's, before todays modern Magnums such as 300 Win, and even the 308 Norma were even thought of.

I also upgraded the Beuhler safety to a Gentry Custom model 70 style three position side swing safety. Here she is.....

Should mention also that inthose days most gunsmiths were following Rev Roy Weatherby's lead and he was twisting his 300 WBY's back then 1 in 12, so that is what I have as well. Will throw a short fat 180 OK, but in Barnes I am limited to no higher than the 130gr TTSX. Not a bad thing, though, as a 130 TTSX at 3550 (chrono'ed, not guesstimated ) should kill stuff.

The .30 Belted Newton is essentially the .30-.338WM, so the case would match the .338WM dimensionally, except for the neck diameter:

Look like .375 Ruger might do it well. A trip through the sizing die,check the neck thickness, and trim to length.

Gotta' say I find the combination of a "Monte Carlo" comb, and the very traditional Euro "Pancake" cheek piece intriguing, and perhaps the best of both worlds.

I'll have to drool on this keyboard a while, and get back to ya'.

Glad you like it. Pretty sure it is one of a kind or very nearly so, all things considered.

VA, might have to try some 375 ruger brass and see how it comes out. INteresting idea. Wish there was a 30 Ruger, the factory brass from that would probably work just fine with only minimal re-shaping.

Time to order some Cerrosafe chamber casting material.

Been neck sizing 7mm RemMag brass and then fireforming, but will have to locate correct dies to make this work. the photos and specs sound like this is the way to go.

Or a 8x68 S cases, perhaps?

HAWK1, great link for some dies, as well. Much appreciated. Time to get some Cerrosafe and make a chamber cast but it is pretty clear what I have.

The loading data in the Newton site shows 180gr bullets at 3000fps utilizing H4831. That might kill somthin....
