better question is what made you think the .308 is not enough for pigs?
Probably the same thing as spurred the similar threads I see on lots of other forums: * "Is .44mag enough for hogs?" * "Is 45-70 effective on pigs?" * "270 enough 'knock down' for hogs?" * "Is the 30-06 a hog gun?"
Ad Nauseam... I blame that show "HOGS GONE WILD" on the Discovery channel, depicting pigs with glowing red eyes, chasing lone 70lb yearlings with a pack of Great Danes, and acting like (word for word) "80lb monster" piglets are a genuine threat to human life.
My wife raised pigs most of her life. She gets mad when those people open their mouths.
Come on now Mable, cut them boys some slack. Would they sell any advertising or get anybody to watch their show if they just pointed and said," looke there, it's another durned hog."
It's enough. This is a friend and these are only a few of his kills in June, 2011.....all with a DPMS 308. He's killed bigger with the 308...these are just the most recent examples. The peanut farmers and those with wheat in the field thank him.
I hunted hogs in Calif. for at least three decades, and saw them taken with just about every cartridge you can imagine. As always, it's not the size of the hole that matters that much -- it's where it's located. The 308 is MORE than sufficient for the purpose if you place the shot where it's supposed to go.
PM me if you're going to hunt in a lead-free zone. I'll share some pertinent info.
If you're fixin' to put a hole in something, make it a hole to remember.
I've killed several truck loads with an AR-15 .223 and a .22-250. I have filled a couple more trucks with a 12 gauge shotgun from a helicopter and a bunch more with 7mm-08 from the ground. They are super easy to kill. I love how they "paddle" no matter where you hit them or what you hit them with The only time I have had issues killing pigs is when they are over 300 lbs. and I was shooting the AR-15 .223. Those bullets just don't seem to do much to them. They took a LOT of killing Flinch

Heaven, I certainly hope you requisitioned those pics through proper channels!!!
I have found some hogs to be pretty tough animals. If you wound one, he might run off or he might get pissed and come at you. I prefer the traditional "deer" calibers and the bigger the better.

I walked up on a bedded hog once. If he'd had a mind to get me I'd have been got. Don't know which of the two of us were more scared. He squealed loud & I was speechless. My 45 Super was holstered up. Don't think it would have done me a bit of good as I had a rifle in one hand and shooting stix in the other.
I learned a lesson that day.

Look a 308 is plenty for most things on the planet, pigs in California being one Taliban in Afghanistan another. Its all about sticking the right bullet in the proper place. Just know were the enards of the pig are, and you should have no problem even with California pork.
