I can't tell you what's right for you (although I suspect somebody else already has...).

If someone calls them self a Christian, I would think the words of Christ would be a great start.

DD how long ago were you a Catholic and at what age did you decide you weren't? I ask becuase I've been Catholic my entire life (unless you count when I wasn't going regularly) and I've never been 'ruled over' by the pope. Maybe I'm reading more into that than I should but it sure struck me as an odd phrase. Just curious. Thanks.
