Both my 250 Sav. and 25-204's have 1-10 barrels and shoot very well with 100gr and the 250 shoots 117gr RN nicely.

erich

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

10 twist is pretty much where it's at for 25 caliber.
Not much in the way of very long for caliber target bullets, etc. in the quarter bore caliber cartridges to worry about faster twist frown.
That bbl will work fine for light 75gr and heavy 120 grain hunting bullets, and will work for 250 Savage thru 257 Weatherby cool.
Knock yourself out splatter smile smile.

Good luck,

It's true, the pre-1960 Savage lever actions in 250 Savage were 1 in 14" twist and that sucks for longer bullets. Limited mostly to 87gr bullets, though some work okay with shorter 100gr. The 1960 and on production rifles were 1 in 10" twist and handle the longer bullets just fine.

So, I'd definitely suggest a 250 Savage chambering. It's just cool.

well, i have a roberts and weatherby, so ...

i do have a remington vintage varminter in 243, that i don't shoot much anymore, so a donor action is in hand so to speak.

was wondering where what would fit in ?
was thinking about a 25 wssm, or another roberts, and sell off my ruger.

or buy a magnum s/a bolt, and make it a 25 wsm ....

but, guess we'll see ....

just thoughts about a blank.... !!!

1-9" is how I'd run, but twist scares folks around here more than taxes and death.

the Kimbers are 1-10, Steelhead pointed out to me that 1-10 would not stabilize the Barnes 115 grain bullet from my 257 Roberts however the 100 barnes works fine on deer.

I've always done 10's, and that's worked out well with bullets from 75's-120's. But, all this work was done Pre VLD, so if one had VLD designs I'd go 9.

If you don't care about VLD's and the brand of your choice doesn't come in a 9 then I'd not worry and go 10 in a heart beat.

I hve 4 25's all are 10 twist and pre VLD built. Today I'd seriously consider a 9 twist. My bullet of choice is the 117 Pro Hunter, and it works fine in the 10's, but note that it is flat based and not all that long.

The 115 gr TSX needs a faster twist than 10".

if you've got a 1/10 barrel don't sweat it...
if i was ordering a barrel today it'd be 1/9"

i've got a 3 groove 1/10 25-06 that shoots everything i've put in it to decent hunting accuracy... and all of the 75, 90, & 100 gr bullets i've tried have shot spectacularly...

i did not get the velocity that i'd hoped out of the TSX, but only had one suitable powder on hand when playing with it...

I've been running 100gr TTSX, 100gr MK, and 115gr Berger VLD in my 10 twist Tikka, and they all shoot sub-MOA. The MK and VLD stay stable out to 950 yards, which is the farthest that I've shot them.

If I was building a rifle specifically for using VLD's and the longer 120gr target bullets or TSX/TTSX-style bullets, then I'd go 1:9", but a 10" twist will stabilize 75-115gr bullets just fine, with the exception of the 115gr TSX.

My 1 in 10 .25-06 shoots everything up to 100 grains very accurately. With 115-120 grains the accuracy falls off, but is still quite acceptable.

I tend to deer hunt with 100 grain bullets from Hornady and Nosler and both bullets are under an inch with deer loads. The 75 Hornady is around .75 inch.

I had a 1 in 10 twist 257 Roberts. It shot everything up to 120 grs I put through it just fine. I never tried any barnes bullets through it.

And a 1-9" will shoot all the bullets that shoot out of a 1-10" twist just fine also and leave nothing on the table.

I have had a 1-10 fail to stabilize the 110 Accubond as well.

10 is right on the cusp, some work with the longer bullets and some not so well. If you are going custom tube, go 9.

My poor little .257 Roberts A.I. has a 1:10" twist Schneider barrel on a Remington action that was "blueprinted" and barreled by Greg Tannel. It shoots the Hornady 117 grain BT Interlock factory ammo just a tad under a MOA, and handloads with 90 grain Sierra HPBT GameKing bullets under .5". I was really surprised at the performance of the Hornady factory ammo given that it is being fireformed in the improved chamber. So I guess a 1:10" barrel is satisfactory for most applications, at least in this rifle. Although this rifle was intended for varmint at long range, so the 1:10" does okay, erring on the side of a tighter twist is best. 1:9" or 1:8" for heavy bullets would not be a mistake.
