Picked up two of these this week and am intrigued by them. Didn't realize Winchester made a lever 44 mag..

one is a 1968 model and the other I'm not sure..

good, bad and the ugly? bought them kind of on a whim.. so looking for some justification most likely

Justification? They are a lot of fun.

The good is that I don't believe there were a lot of them made. The bad is that I think they may have had feeding issues. The .44 Mag. is, of course, a pistol cartridge. It does very well in carbines/rifles that are designed around pistol-length cartridges, such as the '92 Winchester or '94 Marlin. It doesn't do as well in rifle-length designs. I've never owned one, and could be mistaken on this. At any rate, congrats.

I had a Winchester M94 Trapper in 44 Mag. It never gave me a problem. The guy I sold it too has nothing but good things to say about it.

the other gun is still a pre safety angle ejection but the older one just "feels" better

I would like to find a Trapper in 44 mag without the cross bolt safety. I had a couple of the standard 94 in 44 mag and they functioned perfect.

I've got two saddle rings with the 20" bbl

I had one of the newer 94's in 434 mag, likely from 2005/6. Was a beautiful rifle fit/finish wise. Feeding was good, handled quite well, jumped to the shoulder nicely, that sort of thing. Unfortunately it was prone to misfires. Tore it down and scrubbed it clean, changed out the hammer spring, you name it. I never could get more than 3-4 rounds off before it would misfire again so we parted ways. Was used when I got it so history is unknown.

One you may want to look for is the Browning 92, which was a re-make of the Winchester 1892. These Brownings were made in the late 1970s timeframe. I just picked one up and it is really well made, and feeds .44 Specials just as easily as .44 mags. These are about 10 times better made than the Rossi/Puma line (nothing against those though, as I have one in .45 LC).

I have one of these Browning 92's for sale in 99 - 99.5% for $700 or trade if anyone is interested. It is listed here in the clasifieds.

I have a Browning 92'. I believe that the parts came from Rossi and were finished by Browning. Browning did not make the parts. The rifle is stamped made in Japan, who knows? The rifle I have does not have a saddle ring.

IIRC Miroku (sp?) makes them.

I want a tang safety Win 1894 in 44mag, preferably 20" barrel or less. I cannot find one at a fair price.

Sorry for digging this out but:

What gun did you use and what cartridge?

Was a scope mounted? How far did the deer go after the shot was placed?

I have both a Winny & Marlin .44 Mag . I tested both with the SWC's I had been casting & loading for the S&W wheel gun .

Neither feed well .

Decided to leave the Winny NIB and put it away .

Bought a Lee RNL mold & that is what I feed the Marlin .

Can not remember if I tried any of those RNL loads in the Winny ? But I suspect they would feed fine ?

I have a Winchester "94 AE" with a saddle ring and a cross bolt
safety and 18 inch barrel in 44 mag. Hand loaded 240gr.flat nose
Hornady's at 1650FPS makes it a great HOG / White tail gun.

This year I put a 1x4x20 Leupold on it.( I have OLD EYES).
It keeps this load in 1.5 inch at 50 yards and 3.5" at 100.

My Freezer is FULL !
