I agree brother. It has so much mojo. You and I know that. Just something about running that rifle. A guy that owns a 300 H&H pre 64 model 70 told me he wished his fed as well as that one.. None of my new rifles even come close to comparing to that ol girl....Hey, it looks like the Brno is shooting lights out too..I'm going to have to get on the ball to catch up. My .830" group with the 260gr partition just got its azz kicked by your Brno cry

Yeah, .830" is soooo unsat! You need to step it up! wink

HCR shot a .333" group with the BRNO using 260 ABs. I think I could get there. I'd usually have 2 rounds touching, then a third a little off. Just need to nail that third shot.

I have a 1957 Win M70 standard grade in 375 H&H that is getting some work done to it. It will be cool to see how they compare once it's done!

Just picked up this NIB FN South Carolina made 2008 Limited Edition Model 70 Featherweight Deluxe in .270 Winchester. Pictures just don't capture just how nice this rifle really is. Nice figure up both sides and the butt portion is absolutely gorgeous on both sides. Seems to be about 6 1/2 lbs.

Here is a seldom seen shot up the ying /yang of a mod 70 target in 30-06, Im not sure if its a 56' or 59' model. 4 groove no doubt. Winchester turned out some real barrels in those days !

Here are my pre64's. Left to right.

1960 Standard in 243win. Just found this one two months ago unfired without box.

1949 standard in 270win. I restocked this one last fall from a rough cut blank. I used all hand tools and fully bedded the entire action, barrel, magazine, tang, floorplate and trigger guard. She wears a Burris 4x in Leupy QR mounts and shoots 3/4 MOA.

1941 standard in 22hornet. This is my first model 70. Ground hog killer. Accurate as all get out even with just the Lyman 48.

I have 5 more Model 70s as well but no pics at the moment.

Hornet, is it an illusion or is the barrel on the 243 longer than on the other two rifles? Shouldn't all the rifles have 24" barrels on them? Nice job on the stock on the 270!

That 243 standard is kind of a rare gun as the majority of 243's were Featherweights.

Nope Reelman just an illusion. They are all 24 inchers.

Only the 35 rem, 300 sav, 7mm, and 250/3000 are rarer in a standard. I am very happy with the find. I have only seen one other standard for sale in .243, at Dave Riffle.

Don't forget about the 375 H&H in the standard barrel. There were only a handful of those made. And remember that those calibers you listed are MUCH rarer than the 243 standard. I've seen a couple 243 standards for sale but it seems that they never attain the price that their rarity should demand.

If anyone ever considers buying a rare Model 70 from Dave Riffle I would recommend a polygraph test on him first to make sure it wasn't put together from parts.

I guess I should get some pics of mine to post here...

My current "stable" holds a prewar 300H&H, 1949-vintage "shooter-grade" 30-06 (had a limbsaver installed, side-mount holes plugged, and stock cut out from the mount filled in...looks good, shoots great, but not a collector gun...but for the 5 bills I had to pay for it, it seemed a good deal. smile ), XTR featherweight in 257 Roberts, Classic DBM-S in 30-06, and an Extreme Weather in 300WSM.

I don't know about Dave Riffle, but I would look at that type of activity the same way I view putting together 03 Springfields out of parts. As long as the numbers match up, and the parts are "correct", what's the problem?

Of course, altering Standard barrels to Carbines, re-stamping barrel dates, turning down barrels on a lathe to make a "Gopher Special", etc. is another matter entirely. Or, in the case of the 03, repro cartouches or air gauge stamps.

Seriously? A "rare" rifle from parts?

You can have it.

Well, you selectively omitted that aspect of my original post, but perhaps I should have been clearer. I don't think there's anything wrong with swapping barrels around on Standard or FW rifles in common calibers like .270 or 30-06, as long as the barrel date matches the receiver s/n. Most of those rifles are not rare or particularly collectable. Taking a rare barrel off a receiver that's been buggered-up with sidemount holes and putting it on an unaltered receiver, for example, would be questionable. Even if the numbers matched. Reboring or rebarreling to a rare caliber and reproducing rollmarks, advertising a refin as original, etc. is unacceptable, as are the shenanigans I mentioned previously.

True, there were only about (10) 375's made with a true standard weight barrel. The rest of the 375's in a standard rifle bore a medium heavy barrel contour, of which there were more of those in 375 than a 243.

Either way it is fun for me to look at a picture or pick up a rifle and "disect" the year, what is correct, what is wrong, etc... Makes it interesting for sure.

Here is a '57 375 H&H, in a McMillan stock. The barrel was cut to 21", express sights and barrel band added. It was recently cerakoted and I had the stock painted in a GAP camo scheme. The scope is a VX-6 1-6x24, which is a great match for this gun. It's bright and tack sharp, and I really like the illumination.

I particularly like the scope and the stock. Good choices!

Thanks, Wapiti. I think it came together well. It's actually heading back home to AK, where it belongs. smile
